Washington, D.C. – U.S. Representative Heath Shuler announced this morning that his
District Director, Bruce Peterson, will be retiring after the 4th of July holiday.
As District Director, Mr. Peterson oversaw constituent services and all district operations
for Rep. Shuler. He had served as district director since Rep. Shuler was first elected to
office in 2006.
“It has been my honor to work with Bruce over the past year and a half. He effectively
led our district office, overseeing thousands of constituent casework files, meeting with
individuals and groups, and representing the Office when I had to be in Washington.
Additionally, Bruce has been a tremendous friend and an invaluable resource to me
personally. His voice will be missed in our office, but he has earned this retirement. I
wish him and Carol the very best,” said Rep. Shuler.
Prior to becoming the District Director for Rep. Shuler, Peterson, a veteran of the U.S.
Army, had served Western North Carolina as a teacher, coach, and principal. He retired
from public education in 1995 after serving 31 years.
Peterson is married to Buncombe County Commissioner Carol Peterson.
“It has been an honor and privilege to work for Congressman Heath Shuler,” said Bruce
Peterson. “The citizens of the 11th Congressional District can be proud of his outstanding
record of voting to represent their needs and concerns. He is a unique politician who
truly cares about your problems and is willing to take action. I wish for him the very best
as he continues his journey to improve the opportunities for all the families of Western
North Carolina.”
“While we will miss having Bruce in the office with us daily, we still have an excellent
and dedicated group of constituent service representatives who remain ready to assist
residents of the 11th District with issues they may have with a federal agency,” Rep.
Shuler concluded.
