Congressman John Culberson (R-Tx) has a personal passion for the sciences that he says is genetic. When he graduated from high school, he bought himself a telescope, a Celestron 8.
He continues to look out at opportunities as a member of the House Appropriations Subcommittee, which funds NASA. While he was visiting D.C. for a graduation, he requested to visit NASA’s Langley Research Center to take a closer look in.
Through a center overview and presentations about Langley’s role in NASA’s Mars Science Laboratory, to tours of the 14 x 22 Subsonic Tunnel, and the Landing and Impact Research Facility, a consistent question he asked was: “What can we do to help?”

“The work that you do here is fundamental to keeping the United States on the cutting edge of the entire world,” said Rep. Culberson. “[Congressman] Frank Wolf (R-Va) and I are both very concerned about ensuring that America keeps its leadership role in space exploration and scientific development — that the things for the next generation, like the biggest supercomputer in the world will be built in America, that the manned space program and the aeronautics work that you’re doing here is the best in the world.”
Rep. Culberson was selected to chair the Subcommittee on Military Construction and Veterans Affairs, which has the third largest subcommittee budget on the Appropriations Committee. He is the Vice Chair of the Homeland Security Subcommittee and also serves on the Commerce, Justice and Science Subcommittee.
“He’s a tireless advocate for NASA,” said Donna Lawson, Langley’s Legislative Affairs Officer.
After leaving NASA Langley, the Congressman toured Langley Air Force Base.
