Today, Rep. Pete Stark garnered a commitment from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) to generate a new and rigorous estimate on the cost to Medicare of removing Social Security Numbers (SSN) from beneficiary identification. Use of SSNs on Medicare ID cards and for Medicare billing processes puts seniors and people with disabilities at risk of identity theft.

Ways and Means Committee Democrats today introduced legislation to provide tax credits to businesses that brings jobs and business operations back to America from another country. The Bring Jobs Home Act, H.R. 6152, provides a 20 percent tax credit for businesses that “insource” jobs back to the United States and is paid for by closing tax loopholes for companies that “outsource” jobs overseas and treat distributions of debt securities in a tax-free spin-off transaction in the same manner as distributions of cash or other property.

Michael Michaud (ME-2), led a bipartisan coalition of 59 Members of Congress in calling on the U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC) to ensure that Team USA's uniforms are made in the United States, not in factories overseas. The American company Ralph Lauren designed Team USA's uniforms for the 2012 Summer Olympics, yet had them manufactured in China.

Today, Rep. Pete Stark joined with local business and labor leaders at Tri-Ced Community Recycling in Union City to highlight the need to stem the outsourcing of American jobs. Local leaders -- including Josie Camacho, Alameda Labor Council Executive Secretary Treasurer and Richard Valle, CEO, Tri-Ced and Alameda County Supervisor -- are calling on Congress to pass the Bring Jobs Home Act, H.R. 5542. Rep. Stark is a co-sponsor of the legislation, which would change our tax system to encourage businesses to keep jobs at home instead of sending them abroad.
