Murphy Letter on Upcoming Hearing Regarding Libya Terrorist Attack PDF Print

WASHINGTON— Congressman Chris Murphy sent the following letter to Congressman Darrell Issa, Chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform regarding a hearing to be held on October 10, 2012:

October 4, 2012

The Honorable Darrell Issa
Chairman
Committee on Oversight and Government Reform
United States House of Representatives
Washington, DC  20515

Dear Chairman Issa:

I understand that you have called a Committee hearing for Wednesday, October 10 in order to learn more about the attack on our diplomatic post in Libya.  I welcome the opportunity to explore this troubling event and plan to attend.

As you know, on September 11, 2012, the United States Ambassador to Libya and three other Americans were killed in a horrific terrorist attack on our consulate in Benghazi.  A robust and responsible investigation into this matter is absolutely necessary in order to protect American officials abroad, especially in the often volatile environment of post-revolutionary Middle Eastern nations. I hope that this hearing will provide an open and transparent forum to probe these concerns, while still respecting classified national security information.

I look forward to hearing from Regional Security Officer Eric Nordstrom and Deputy Assistant Secretary for International Programs Charlene Lamb, as well as other officials who may be able to provide the Committee with additional information about the security of our embassies.  I thank you for your effort to keep Committee Members informed about this important issue.

Every Best Wish,

Christopher S. Murphy
Member of Congress
