People from all over the country and world visit Washington, DC to explore major tourist attractions including the White House and US Capitol; but the office of Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton exclusively arranges tours for DC residents. Non DC residents should contact their Congressional Representative or National Embassy.  Congresswoman Norton's office arranges tours for the following federal buildings for DC RESIDENTS ONLY:

White House

Information on White House Tours

The Secret Service requires a minimum on 30 days in order to process the background check for everyone planning on visiting the White House.

  • White House Tours may be scheduled through the office of any Member of Congress. District of Columbia residents may request tours through Congresswoman Norton's office. White House tours are offered on Tuesday through Saturday, excluding federal holidays, and all tours are subject to cancellations. Tour times vary throughout the week: on Tuesday through Thursday, tours will be offered from 7:30am to 11:00am, on Friday tours will be offered from 7:30am to 12:00pm, and on Saturday tours will be offered from 7:30am to 1:00pm.
  • In order for your tour request to be submitted, the White House Visitor Office requires security information for everyone planning on touring the White House. The first, middle and last name of all visitors in addition to the date of birth, the social security number, gender, city and state of current residency is required. This information is needed before your tour request can be submitted to the White House Visitor Office. The White House accepts requests up to six months in advance, but at least 30 days in advance.
  • All are welcomed to visit the White House Visitors Center located in the Department of Commerce building at 15th and E Streets, NW. The Visitors Center is open seven days a week from 7:30 am to 4:00pm. For more information, you may contact the Visitors Office 24 hour hotline at (202) 456-7041.
  • The following items are prohibited inside the White House: mace and pepper spray, aerosol containers and non-aerosol spray, oversized duffle bags, backpacks, suitcases, cans and bottles, knives of any size, razors and box cutters. The only permittable items include identification, keys, and cell phones. Also, there are no storage facilities inside the White House for any extra materials.

*With the election of President Obama, there has been a resurgence in requests for White House tours amongst DC residents, so it is very important to place tour requests several months in advance in order to have a likely chance of securing a tour on your requested tour dates.*

  • The White House offers various public events throughout the year including: the Easter Egg Roll  in the Spring, Garden tours in the Fall, and Christmas tree lighting in the Winter.  Tours of the White House involve viewing the East Executive wing only, and can be arranged by filling out this form below.

All tour requests should be submitted at least three months in advance in order to secure the requested tour date(s).

US Capitol

Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton encourages DC students to visit the US Capitol. The office of Congresswoman Norton will assist by arranging for students to meet with the Congresswoman, tour her Capitol Hill Office, tour the US Capitol, and watch US Senators and Representatives debate issues in a hearing or on the Senate or House floor. The US Capitol Visitors Center now entails Emancipation Hall, two orientation theaters, a 530 seat restaurant, two gift shops, ample restrooms, and a secure environment.

  • Capitol Tours may be scheduled through the office of any Member of Congress. District of Columbia residents may request tours through the office if Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton. All reservations will be scheduled, per availability, on a first-come, first-serve basis. Congressional Tours may be reserved on Monday through Saturday (except Holidays), between 9:00 AM and 3:30 PM.
  • Also, walk up tour tickets are distributed, upon arrival, on Monday thru Saturday, beginning at 9:00 AM. Public tour tickets are distributed from the Guide Service kiosk located at the Southwest corner of the Capitol grounds, adjacent to the Botanic Gardens as well as on First Street, NE adjacent to the US Supreme Court.
  • Capitol tours may also be reserved on your own by visiting the website of the US Capitol Visitors Center. The US Capitol Visitors Center is also open to the public on Monday through Saturday from 9am-5pm, and extended hours are granted when US Congress is in session. To access the congressional schedule, you may visit the website of the House Majority Leader.
  • All tours will begin and end at the US Capitol Visitors Center located on First Street, NE adjacent to the Supreme Court. The US Capitol Tour Guide Service's personnel will be on hand to greet all visitors when they arrive. Visitors must present a valid tour confirmation letter to be admitted on a US Capitol tour. Visitors will be required to pass through Capitol Police security screening prior to building entry.
  • The following items are prohibited inside the Capitol: mace and pepper spray, aerosol containers and non-aerosol spray, oversized duffle bags, backpacks, suitcases, cans and bottles, knives of any size, razors and box cutters.

House and Senate Gallery passes are available for DC Residents in the Capitol Hill office of Congresswoman Norton and may be picked up during normal office hours from 9am-6pm, Monday through Friday.

*During the holiday season, it’s very important to place tour requests several months in advance, in order to ensure you'll receive a tour on your requested tour date.*

Senate's Virtual Tour of the Capitol

Bureau of Engraving & Printing

  • The Bureau of Engraving & Printing offers tours on Monday through Friday at 8:15am and 8:45am.  Congressional offices can only reserve ten people per day, so groups larger than ten have to request different potential tour dates.

Department of Treasury

  • Tours of the Department of Treasury are offered on Saturday's only at various times between 9:00am and 11:15am.  All visitors must complete the form below and security form, before a tour can be arranged.

Pentagon

  • Tour requests for the Pentagon must be submitted at least 14 days in advance and up to three months in advance.  Tours are offered on Monday through Friday from 9am-3pm.  All tours begin and end at the Pentagon Metro Station.  In order to place a request, groups must complete the form below, and the pentagon security roster.
