Sullivan Statement on the President’s State of the Union Address

Washington, Jan 28, 2008 -

Congressman John Sullivan released the following statement regarding President Bush’s State of the Union address to the joint session of Congress:

“President Bush said that our economy is ‘fundamentally strong.’  This is true, especially in Oklahoma.  Our state’s unemployment rate is 4.5 percent, compared to the national average of five percent, and when it comes to housing foreclosures and Adjustable Rate Mortgages, Oklahomans are fairing far better than the rest of the country.  However, we need to remain vigilant and prepare for what the road ahead may bring us.

“One way to help keep Oklahoma’s economy strong is by ensuring that the Republican passed tax cuts of 2001 and 2003 are not left to expire in 2011.  These tax cuts have proven to increase productivity and economic growth.  If these tax cuts are not extended, Oklahomans will face skyrocketing capital gains rates, a shrinking child tax credit, and increasing income and estate tax rates.  The expiring tax cuts will result in 116 million Americans paying roughly $1800 more in taxes.

“A fiscally responsible America depends on a Federal government that budgets and spends wisely, and a government that is accountable to its citizens and taxpayers.  This means that Congress must exercise fiscal restraint when it comes to our spending bills.  I pledge to continue fighting wasteful spending and increased taxes.

“Tonight, the President also touched on the need for immigration reform, an issue which has largely stalled in Congress.  Border security is national security.  Porous borders entice terrorists, drug cartel operatives and gang members to enter our country, and operational control of our borders should be among the highest priorities of Congress.  I remain committed to ensuring that all 700 miles of double-layered border fence is built and funded, will continue to reject any provisions which will slow this process down or compromise our national sovereignty.

“We have much to be thankful and hopeful for in our great nation, but more can always be accomplished.  Through innovation and change, Americans will continue to prosper.  I promise to carry on my work for the people of the First District and fight for what is important to them and all Oklahomans.”
