Sullivan Statement on DOJ’s Decision to Sue Arizona Over Immigration Law

Washington, Jul 6, 2010 - Today, Congressman John Sullivan released the following statement taking issue with U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder’s decision to file a politically driven law suit aimed at stopping Arizona’s tough new immigration law.

“Not only has the Federal Government failed the American people by refusing to secure our borders, but now the Department of Justice is actively trying to stop states from taking action to protect their own citizens – that is just outrageous.  The simple fact is that Arizona took action for one reason, because the Federal Government would not.  Arizona, just like every other state, has the right to protect their citizens and communities –individual states wouldn’t need to pass their own laws if the Federal Government would simply do its job and enforce the laws we already have on the books.  Our southern border is under siege with both human and drug smuggling and is on the front lines dealing with Mexico’s drug violence that is spilling over into the United States and threatening the lives of American citizens.  Attorney General Holder’s decision to sue Arizona is severely misguided and is placing politics above the safety of American citizens and our national security.”
