Recently, Dassel-Cokato High School's National Honor Society (NHS) came to visit Washington D.C. The students, who are a mix of sophomores, juniors, and seniors, were on a five day trip to Washington, D.C. to meet their elected representatives and tour the city.

Jon Ring, a math instructor at Dassel-Cokato, led the high school trip. Ring said the students are chosen for the National Honor Society based on outstanding achievements in scholarship, leadership, service, and character. They spent their time in Washington visiting historical sites and learning up-close how our system of government works.

A 2004 family trip to the area inspired Ring to organize the Washington journey once he became the NHS advisor in 2005. He said the trip gives his students a chance to experience leadership at the highest level while recognizing the men and women who serve the nation's armed forces and government.

Sen. Franken talked to the students about his life in public service and some of the legislation he has worked on, specifically his efforts to provide service dogs for wounded veterans. Sen. Franken explained that the bill-which enjoyed bipartisan support-will not only help the country's veterans, but also shows that Senators from different parties can work together to get things done.

Sen. Franken congratulated the assembled students. He said they had worked hard to get into the NHS and should be proud of their achievement.
