The 2013 Deadline: Check Back Later

Each year, one outstanding high school artist from the 21st Congressional District has the opportunity to display their artwork for a year at a national exhibition in the U.S. Capitol.

An Artistic Discovery is a national exhibition coordinated by Members of Congress. Since the exhibition was first launched in 1982, nearly 4,500 local contests have been conducted that have involved more than 650,000 high school students. The winning piece of art from each Congressional district is put on display in the Cannon Tunnel, a pedestrian walkway leading to the U. S. Capitol.

The Artistic Discovery provides Members of Congress and the public an opportunity to encourage and recognize the rich artistic talents of young Americans.

If you are interested in competing for a place in the national exhibition, please review the guidelines. In addition, all participants will need to complete the student release form, which should be included with all art entries. Finally, all art must be delivered to my Visalia office by the appropriate deadline.

For more information please call or visit my district office.

Suitability Guidelines

As outlined in these guidelines, the final decision regarding suitability for exhibition in the Capitol is left to a panel of qualified persons chaired by the Architect of the Capitol. While it is not the intent to censor any artwork, we do wish to avoid the situation of hanging artwork that is potentially controversial and inappropriate for display in the Capitol.

Artwork must adhere to the policy of the House Office Building Commission. In accordance with this policy, exhibits depicting subjects of contemporary political controversy or of a sensationalistic or gruesome nature are not allowed. It is necessary that all artwork be reviewed by the panel chaired by Architect of the Capitol and any portions not in consonance with the Commission’s policy will be omitted from the exhibit.
