Health Care

In the 112th Congress, I will fight to make sure that Iowans continue to reap the benefits of comprehensive health care reform and support further measures that make health insurance more affordable and accessible for all Iowans.

During the 111th Congress, I supported the Affordable Care Act in a major step forward toward making health insurance more affordable, accessible, and stable for Iowa’s families, small businesses owners, and seniors. After years of fighting for a health care system that puts patients before profits, this legislation begins to level the playing field for all Iowans by holding the health insurance industry accountable and preventing denials of care and coverage, including for preexisting conditions.

This health care reform legislation has immediate benefits within the first year of enactment. Small businesses have access to tax credits to cover their employees’ health insurance. Seniors who fall into the Medicare Part D donut hole in 2010 automatically receive a $250 rebate. Children can no longer be denied coverage for preexisting conditions and parents are now allowed to keep their children on their coverage plans up to their 26th birthday.

How is the Affordable Care Act Working For You?

On March 23, 2010, Congress passed and President Obama signed into law historic health care reform legislation: the Affordable Care Act. At the two-year anniversary of this landmark law, new data demonstrates the benefits that the law has already provided to seniors, young adults, small businesses, and many others in the 3rd Congressional District of Iowa. As a result of the law:

3,500 young adults in the district now have health insurance.

8,000 seniors in the district received prescription drug discounts worth $4.9 million, an average discount of $610 per senior.

72,000 seniors in the district received Medicare preventive services without paying any co-pays, coinsurance, or deductibles.

35,000 children and 130,000 adults now have health insurance that covers preventive services without paying any co-pays, coinsurance, or deductibles.

500 small businesses in the district received tax credits to help maintain or expand health care coverage for their employees.

$23.8 million in public health grants have been given to community health centers, hospitals, doctors, and other healthcare providers in the district to improve the community’s health.

8,000 to 37,000 children with preexisting health conditions can no longer be denied coverage by health insurers.
