Boswell Briefing: Celebrating Our Freedoms

Dear Fellow Iowan,

Tomorrow marks 236 years since our nation declared its independence. The same values and freedoms for which we fought for and have since defended still stand strong today.

Our brave men and women in uniform, who have put their lives on the line to protect what we as Americans cherish, deserve our support both during their deployment and when they return home. That’s why I made sure our new highway bill, which recently was approved by Congress, included a veteran’s hiring preference provision. Our returning veterans are facing unemployment rates higher than the national average and this measure would help combat this issue by requiring the federal government and recipients of its transportation funding to give veterans preference in hiring for construction projects.

We have made a solemn promise to service members that when they risk it all on behalf of maintaining freedom for all of America, then we will care for their wounds if injured – both physically and mentally – and help them continue their education and transition back to civilian life when they come home.

As we join family and friends this Independence Day, we must remember just how important these freedoms and values are to us and how fortunate we are to still be able to enjoy them today. We know not everyone in the world is able to celebrate such an occasion and many people continue to strive for what we’ve long enjoyed.

I know we have the ability to overcome the challenges before us as Americans always have. I look forward to continuing my work in Washington to improve the quality of life for Iowans and all Americans so everyone can achieve the American Dream while upholding our sacred freedoms.

I wish you and your loved ones a very festive and safe holiday as we celebrate the birth of this great nation.

Sincerely,

Leonard L. Boswell
Member of Congress
