WASHINGTON – U.S. Rep. Diana DeGette (CO-1) issued the following statement today after stocks fell sharply on the backs of weak employment and manufacturing reports.  

“Today's losses in the financial markets are a disturbing reminder of the fragility of our economic recovery.  Sent into a downward spiral by lackluster employment and manufacturing reports, the market reaffirmed what Democrats in Congress have always maintained: the most important issue we face is creating jobs for American families.  Today should serve as a reminder to us all of what's at stake, and should make clear it is time for House Republicans to stop playing political and partisan games with something as important as our economic well-being.  We must work together to get our nation's fiscal house in order, and start helping get Americans back to work. It's time the House Leadership acknowledges that the responsible first step to doing that is to raise the debt ceiling so we can pay our bills.”
