ARLINGTON NATIONAL CEMETERY
Open daily. October - March: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. April - September: 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the Amphitheater, the Custis-Lee Mansion and the graves of Presidents John F. Kennedy and William Howard Taft. Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier every hour on the hour during winter months and every half-hour during the summer months.

School and civic organizations coming to Washington, D.C., may lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns. A representative of the requesting organization should write to the Director, Ceremonies and Special Events, U.S. Army Military District of Washington, 103 3rd Avenue, Fort Lesley J. McNair, D.C., 20319-5058 on organizational letterhead. The sender should indicate on the outside of the envelope that it is a "wreath-laying request." The letter should indicate when the group is visiting, its schedule limitations, and complete contact information. A representative of MDW will thereafter call to make further arrangements and provide further instructions should the date appear open. No fax, e-mail or telephone requests are accepted.

While dozens of such ceremonies are arranged each week, it is possible that an official event could arise that would take precedence.

At all ceremonial events, the public is reminded to conduct themselves with dignity and respect in manner and dress and to follow all instructions of the Tomb Guards, or other representatives of the superintendent of the cemetery or the commanding general of the U.S. Army Military District of Washington.

MARTIN LUTHER KING MEMORIAL

Visit the newest monument on our National Mall. The breath taking statue is the only monument on the National Mall not dedicated to a President or war hero. The Monument is located on the northwest corner of the tidal basin, across from the Thomas Jefferson Memorial.

IWO JIMA STATUE
One of the largest bronze statues ever cast honors all U.S. Marines killed in battle since 1775.  Located in Arlington, off Route 50, across the Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Bridge.

THOMAS JEFFERSON MEMORIAL
South Bank of the Tidal Basin.  Open 24 hours daily.  At the Swan Boathouse you can rent a paddle boat to cruise the basin.

KOREAN WAR VETERANS MEMORIAL
The memorial is staffed from 8 a.m. to midnight every day except December 25 by Park Rangers who are available to answer questions and present interpretive themes.  A bookstore in the nearby Lincoln Memorial sells informational items relating to both the memorial and the Korean War.  Phone:  (202) 426-6841.

FRANKLIN DELANO ROOSEVELT MEMORIAL
Fourth monument to an American president on the National Mall.  The memorial, divided into four outdoor galleries, one for each of FDR's terms in office, is located along the famous Cherry Tree Walk on the Tidal Basin.  Phone: (202) 426-6841.

VIETNAM VETERANS MEMORIAL
Near the Lincoln Memorial.  Henry Bacon Drive and Constitution Avenue, N.W.  Always open.  Constructed of black granite to honor all Americans who served in the Vietnam War.  Inscribed in the Memorial walls, in chronological order, are the names of more than 58,000 who gave their lives or who remain missing.

WORLD WAR II MEMORIAL
17th Street between Constitution and Independence Avenues, N.W. World War II is the only 20th century event commemorated with a memorial on the central axis of the National Mall. It honors all those who served in the United States Armed Forces during the war, those who gave their lives, and those who sacrificed at home in order to aid the war effort. VOYAGE IN D.C.
The Smithsonian Institution, in a unique collaboration with Challenger Center for Space Science Education and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, will premiere Voyage on October 17, 2001 in the nation's capital. The exhibition will be placed in Washington, D.C. at the Smithsonian, between the National Air and Space Museum and the Smithsonian Castle--corresponding to 600 meters or the length of six football fields.

CORCORAN GALLERY OF ART
17th Street and New York Avenue. Throughout its history, the Corcoran Gallery has contributed to the advancement of American art through its exhibition and interpretation of contemporary American Art. The Gallery also houses an early American collection that reflects a variety of subject matter and range of expressions demonstrating the development of American art. It is open every day except Tuesdays from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The museum is closed Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year's Day. Extended hours are Thursday evenings until 9:00 p.m.

DUMBARTON OAKS
1703 32nd Street, NW.  The Dumbarton Oaks Research Library and Collection is housed in a nineteenth-century Federal-style house built on the crest of a wooded valley in the Georgetown section of Washington, D.C. The institution now has important research resources in the areas of Byzantine studies, the history of landscape architecture, and Pre-Columbian studies. The collections of Byzantine and Pre-Columbian art and the rare books and prints relating to the gardens are on public display.

THE NATIONAL ARBORETUM
3501 New York Avenue, N.E. The Arboretum's beautiful 446-acre campus in Washington, D.C. contains an array of display gardens, collections, and historical monuments set among native stands of eastern deciduous trees. Arboretum grounds are open from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m every day of the year except December 25th . The Administration Building is open Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and on weekends 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

TUDOR PLACE
1644 31st St., NW.  Designed by Dr. William Thornton, who also designed the U.S. Capitol as well as the Octagon House, this property, comprised of one city block on the crest of Georgetown Heights, had an excellent view of the Potomac River.
