Dent Statement on Attack Against American Officials in Libya

WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Rep. Charlie Dent (PA-15) today issued the following statement on the attack against officials from the U.S. Department of State in Benghazi, Libya. Four Americans were killed in the attack last night, including U.S. Ambassador to Libya, J. Christopher Stevens:

“My thoughts and prayers are with the families of those killed in last night’s reprehensible attack in Benghazi. The four Americans who lost their lives, including Ambassador Stevens, were not only serving our nation, but working tirelessly to help the Libyan people establish a new democratic government. I am terribly saddened their lives were taken in a brutal attack reminiscent of the deplorable actions of Libya’s former tyrant.

“I demand the Libyan government thoroughly investigate this attack, apprehend those responsible for the atrocities, and ensure they face justice. The extremists who committed these murders must be punished for their despicable actions.

“In the United States, the four officials who perished last night will be remembered for their sacrifice and courageous service to our nation. I am confident they will be remembered in Libya for helping nurture the American ideals of freedom and justice in a fledgling democracy once ruled by one of the world’s most notorious dictators.”
