Florida's 14th Congressional District includes the Port Charlotte area in Charlotte County; all of Lee County (which includes Cape Coral, Fort Myers, Fort Myers Beach, Bonita Springs, Sanibel and Captiva Islands, Lehigh Acres and Estero); and the coastal strip of Collier County, including Naples and Marco Island, both located on the Gulf Coast.  It is a region known for its spectacular white-sand beaches, quaint islands, warm weather, and abundant opportunities for recreation such as golf, boating, fishing and sailing.

In 1850, settlers built Fort Myers during their fight with the Seminole Indians.  After the Seminole Indians left the area in 1858, the region remained mostly deserted until the late 1880s, when wealthy northerners began spending their winter months in Southwest Florida's mild climate.  Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, Charles Lindburgh, Harvey Firestone and Dr. Alexis Carrel all had winter homes in Fort Myers.

The construction of the Tamiami Trail (a 273-mile stretch of road that connects Tampa to Miami) in the 1920s brought thousands of Northerners and Midwesterners to the area.  Today, the region is one of the fastest-growing areas in the State of Florida, with over 1.6 million people calling Southwest Florida home.

Southwest Florida has a long history of professional baseball teams coming to the area for Spring Training.  In 1925, Connie Mack, the owner and manager of the Philadelphia Athletics, brought his team to Terry Park Stadium in Fort Myers (possibly the oldest surviving spring-training facility in the State of Florida) for spring training.  Today, baseball fans can take in a Boston Red Sox or Minnesota Twins game during the months of February and March.

With our gorgeous weather and abundant sunshine, Southwest Florida is an ideal place to play a round of golf, enjoy the beautiful beaches of the Gulf Coast, hunt for seashells on Sanibel and Captiva Islands, or visit one of the wildlife refuges in Collier County.
