Medicare premiums and deductibles for 2012 announced

The Department of Health and Human Services has announced the
Medicare premiums and deductibles for 2012. Below is
information on some of the rate adjustments and premiums. For

Medicare Part A
Medicare Part A premiums will be increasing by $1 per month to a
total of $451 for 2012, and the deducible will increase by $24. If
you have between 30 and 39 quarters of coverage you may buy into
Part A at a reduced monthly premium rate of $248 for 2012.
When admitted to a hospital, the Part A deductible for inpatient
care will be $1,156 in 2011, an increase of $24. Medicare
recipients must pay an additional $289 per day for days 61 through
90 in 2012, and $578 per day for hospital stays beyond the 90th
day. Skilled nursing facilities beneficiaries will pay
$144.50 for days 21 through 100 in 2012.
Medicare Part B
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced that
in 2012, the Medicare Part B deductible will be decreased by $22.
It was estimated earlier this year that the predicted monthly
premiums would be $106.60, when they will actually be $99.90, a
$15.50 decrease from the standard 2011 premium of $115.40.
Medicare recipients will also receive free preventive services and
a 50 percent discount on covered prescription drugs when they enter
the prescription drug doughnut hole.
Medicare Part D
The estimated premium for 2012 is $30 dollars, which is 76 cents
lower than 2011. The estimate for the average supplemental
coverage premium is $8. The estimated average for the total
2012 Medicare Part D premium is $38.
Medicare Advantage
Medicare Advantage premiums should come in 4% lower on average
in 2012 from 2011. About 99.7 percent of Medicare beneficiaries
should retain access to a Medicare advantage plan.
