LaTourette honored by Humane Society
Wednesday, March 30, 2011
U.S. Rep. Steven C. LaTourette (R-OH) today was presented with a
2010 Legislative Leader award by the Humane Society of the United
States and its affiliate, the Humane Society Legislative Fund.
The Congressman was honored for his work on downed cattle
legislation, which requires slaughter facilities to
humanely euthanize cattle and calves too sick and injured to
walk.
"These animals are suffering and there are health risks if they
are slaughtered for human consumption," said LaTourette, who
introduced the Downed Animal and Food Safety Protection Act in the
last Congress.
"Representative LaTourette has been an important voice for
enhancing animal protection in federal law," said Wayne Pacelle,
president and CEO of the HSUS. "We're grateful to him for
taking the lead and drawing attention to these vital concerns."
