Defense and National Security

A strong National Defense is intrinsically linked to our National Security, which is the highest responsibility of the Federal Government. I am pleased and honored that as Chairman of the Homeland Security Subcommittee on Counterterrorism and Intelligence I will have a direct role influencing the policy created to keep our nation safe from the real, ever-evolving threat of terrorism.

The War in Afghanistan is the front line on the War on Terror; and eliminating al-Qaeda training camps and safe havens is directly connected to our safety and security here at home. I am fully supportive of U.S. Military efforts being undertaken to accomplish these goals. We must support our troops and support their mission. I am committed to providing them with the best equipment, training, and resources available to ensure their success on the battlefield.

On the home front, much has changed since September 11, 2001. It is crucial that we identify and understand the nature and gravity of the threat the United States still faces today from foreign and homegrown terrorists. As Subcommittee Chairman I will help take the lead in honestly examining the threat, ensuring that all agencies responsible for the safety and protection of Americans are coordinating communications and have the resources they need to combat those who would do us harm.
