Along with 81 other House Democrats, Joe Courtney and I urged the President to NOT raise the eligibility age for Medicare. We must work to strengthen Medicare and respond to rising health care costs, not make it more difficult for families and seniors to buy health insurance.- Glad to be in San Antonio this afternoon to announce that the San Antonio Housing Authority received $29.75 million for the Choice Neighborhood program. After visiting with residents and SAHA leaders, I am enthusiastic for the opportunity these federal funds afford Wheatley Courts.

- Saturday is World AIDS Day. My first AIDS Walk in Austin was in 1995, and I have looked forward to participating each year in Austin—and now in San Antonio—because with every small step, we can make great strides. Fighting AIDS is not only about advancing prevention, treatment, and a cure—but also advancing in the fight against prejudice, ignorance, and discrimination. As a member of the Congressional HIV/AIDS Caucus: I was glad that with my support, Congress reauthorized the Ryan White Act—the largest provider of services for people living with HIV/AIDS in the United States, and I continue to work for NIH funding for AIDS research.

This report is more evidence that extending help to those, who are seeking work, is a better investment for our economy than extending tax breaks for those resting comfortably atop the economic ladder. http://www.cbo.gov/publication/43734 CC: Ways and Means Committee DemocratsRep. Disturbing news from the Federal Reserve that student debt now tops $956 billion, of which about 11% is delinquent. This impacts our economy, our future competitiveness and so many American families. We should be investing in education—fro...m Pre-K to post-grad -- making it possible for students to achieve all the education for which he or she is willing to work. At a time when student debt has surpassed the amount of credit card debt, we must be doing more, not less, to make higher education more affordable. We can start by making permanent my More Education tax cut. Also known as the American Opportunity Tax Credit (AOTC), this law provides a tax cut to students or their families by up to $10,000 over four years to reimburse for tuition, textbooks, and other higher education expenses. This $2,500 annual credit can cover most or all of the expenses at many colleges and assist greatly in paying for more costly programs. The President has also called on Congress to make this tax cut permanent. http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/11/27/us-usa-fed-consumerdebt-idUSBRE8AQ16R20121127See MoreRep. Seeing a child enthusiastically unwrap holiday gifts is a true delight. Of the many joys that come with the holiday season, few things match the smile of the face of a child with a new toy—as the father of two grown daughters, I had been ou...t of the market for toys, but with three young granddaughters I am in the toy market once again. Toys are meant to entertain, educate and inspire the imagination. It is unfortunate that not all toys are entirely safe. In fact, some toys can seriously injure children. With the participation of my daughter, Dr. Lisa Doggett, the Texas Public Interest Research Group unveiled its 27th annual ‘Trouble in Toyland’ report providing safety guidelines for all those parents, grandparents, and friends who will be purchasing toys for small children this holiday season, as well as toys currently on the shelf that could pose a risk. I encourage you to look through this important report. Thanks again to PIRG for advocating for the safety of our children again this holiday season and for helping parents ensure many more happy holidays for their children.
