Hoyer Statement on 40th Anniversary of Title IX PDF Print E-mail

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-5) released the following statement commemorating the 40th anniversary of Title IX which is Saturday, June 23:

“Forty years ago tomorrow, Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 was enacted to remove barriers to equal opportunity in education and school athletics. This was a milestone that enabled the achievements of the tens of millions of American women who have since participated in the full range of educational and athletic opportunities this country has to offer.

“While we still have work to do to achieve greater equality between men and women, including equal pay for equal work, the fact that Title IX has endured for forty years is a testament to our steady advance toward that goal.  As the father of three daughters and the grandfather of two granddaughters who benefitted from Title IX, I join in marking this anniversary and in celebrating the millions of dreams that Title IX helped make possible.”
