Hoyer Announces Federal Grant to Provide Permanent Housing and Support to Homeless Veterans PDF Print E-mail

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-5) released the following statement today after the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced that HUD will provide $282,944 to the Housing Authority of Prince George’s County to supply permanent housing and case management for homeless veterans.

“I am pleased that Prince George’s County was awarded this grant, which will help reduce the number of homeless veterans in our community and provide them with the housing and resources necessary to put them on the path to success,” stated Congressman Hoyer. “I want to acknowledge the Obama Administration for their commitment to eliminating veteran homelessness by 2015. Not one of the brave men and women who have served and sacrificed for our nation deserve to be living on the street.”

The grant announced today is the first of two rounds of funding provided through HUD’s Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing Program (HUD-VASH), which is administered by HUD, VA, and local housing agencies to provide permanent housing with case management and other supportive services for 10,500 homeless veterans across the country. VA Medical Centers provide supportive services and case management to eligible homeless veterans and then refer them to public housing agencies for rental assistance vouchers.
