Mikulski Becomes Longest-Serving Female Member of Congress

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-5) released the following statement today recognizing Senator Barbara Mikulski (D-MD) for becoming the longest-serving female Member of Congress in history:

“I join my colleagues and the people of Maryland in celebrating Senator Barbara Mikulski, who today became the longest-serving woman in the history of the United States Congress. Throughout her years of service in the House and Senate, Senator Mikulski has always been a trailblazer and a voice for women in Maryland and across America. From her career as a social worker to her work in government, she has always been motivated by a commitment to expanding opportunities for families, young people, and the underserved. Whenever their voices have gone unheard in the halls of Congress, Senator Mikulski has lent them her voice. Perhaps most importantly, she has been a strong role model for women, and over the years, has served as a mentor to a generation of women leaders elected to Congress. Senator Mikulski’s continued achievements serve as a reminder to all of us of why it is especially important that we continue standing up in defense of the equal role of women in our politics and society.

“I have been privileged to serve with Senator Mikulski as a part of what she calls ‘Team Maryland,’ and I am proud to call her a colleague and a friend. She remains an outstanding advocate for Marylanders, and I join in wishing her the best as she continues to serve our state and its people.”
