U.S. Rep. Steven C. LaTourette (OH-14) today announced
that his office will host an annual Military Academy Information
Day on Saturday, Sept. 29.
The event starts at 9:30 a.m.at the Auburn Career
Center,Technology Learning Center Building, 8221 Auburn Road in
Concord Township.
Representatives from the U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Military
Academy (West Point), U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, U.S. Naval
Academy and U.S. Coast Guard Academy will attend, make
presentations and take questions.
The program is open to students of all ages and their
families. Anyone who has an interest in learning more about
the service academies and the nomination process is welcome to
attend.
LaTourette said his office uses the "competitive" nomination
process, which is used by most members of Congress.
LaTourette is able to submit up to 10 nominations for each vacancy
at the various academies. Candidates are then ranked by the
admissions offices in order of merit in accordance with the
specific academy system. The most highly qualified student is
selected for an offer of admission (appointment) to fill the
vacancy.
This process applies to all service academies except the United
States Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut. It
offers appointments solely on the basis of an annual nationwide
competition, and there are no Congressional nominations or
geographical quotas involved.
