  1. My heart goes out to all of those affected by the horrible, senseless tragedy today in Newtown, Connecticut. Let’s keep the victims and their loved ones in our thoughts and prayers.

    • Rob, What is wrong with our Senators and Congressmen? Tightening gun control is not the answer. The young man got his mothers guns which he also used to kill her, and they probably legally registered. What we need is to do more to put armed security in our nations schools. We also need to pray for those poor families in Conn. There was another event in China on Friday also, and guess what the weapon was; A kitchen Knife. A farmer in Biejing hacked 20 children on their way to school. Even though none of those children died, it still was hurrific and will leave an eternal scar on those children the rest of their lives. The event in Fort Hood on Friday which left a soldier dead, involved military weapons. How are we going to make the control of those more stringent???

    • What we should do is appeal to retired law enforcement to share days at a minimum pay, white shirt, badge and pistol at the door with a chair. About two years ago I had to drop something off to my wife teaching. I rang the bell they asked me over an intercom and buzzed the door open without really seeing me. Even a parked police car says a lot.

Before getting to the school, this shooter broke gun laws by stealing firearms, using them to murder, possession of handguns by person under the age of 21, possession of handgun ammo by a person under the age of 21, and parking in a fire lane! More laws are not going to stop this kind of thing, adress the problem for God's sake. Fix the mental health system, remove the stigma for seeking help. Remove any law that prevents a person from defending themselves against the evil that will surface from time to time. I will Vote this issue, and will vote against anyone who tries to add more gun laws to the already bloated books.

Your leadership is required immediately. Your constituents expect and demand your attention to the murders in our country. We elected you to represent us and govern in Washington. The murders at Virginia Tech, in CO, in WI and now in Conn are barbaric events that never should have happened. Law enforcement is required. New laws may be necessary. Assault weapons must be removed from private citizens possession. Not next year, but NOW. If the US Government must enact a "buy-back" program and collect these weapons and ammo, then, that must happen. Our country is an arsenal and our sick and deranged citizens seem able to murder little children, their teachers, their own parents at will in cold blood; no one is safe - except those of course who have secret service protection and/or private bodyguards. You must confront the hugely powerful NRA and other weapon and ammo lobbies; this is your work, this is why you were elected - public safety and public health are YOUR priorities on our behalf. We look for your immediate announcement that you will be responsive and proactive to render assault weapons and hoards of ammo illegal. The NRA is a cruel, money-grubbing means of killing. The NRA should be curtailed.

  3. I am humbled that Chairman McKeon has chosen me to lead the Armed Services Committee's Readiness Subcommittee in the 113th Congress. I look forward to ensuring that our dedicated servicemen and women are properly and effectively resourced, both as they are conducting their missions and when they return home.

  4. 71 years ago today, our nation was attacked at Pearl Harbor, resulting in the deaths of thousands of Americans and the beginning of U.S. involvement in World War II. We must always remember the sacrifice of those who perished on that fateful day and the bravery of the individuals who fought back however they could. Their sacrifice will live on and their selfless example will continue to inspire us...
and our fellow Americans into the future.

My father was a veteran of World War II, and his guidance has been an instrumental part of my life. As we remember the individuals who fought for our nation that day on Oahu and later across the Pacific Theater and in Europe, let’s also keep in mind the brave men and women of our all-volunteer force currently serving our nation, as well as their families. Those who’ve fought for the cause of freedom, from this nation’s inception through today, are the reason America is the greatest nation the world has ever known.

  7. I was pleased to see Westmoreland County and Virginia's Northern Neck getting some great attention in the Travel section of the New York Times. I am truly blessed to be able to drive home to Montross each night: http://travel.nytimes.com/2012/11/25/travel/virginias-lost-history.html?ref=travel&_r=0
  8. I’d like to wish you all a safe and happy Thanksgiving holiday with friends, family, and loved ones. As we celebrate the many things we’re thankful for, let us not forget our fellow citizens who aren’t quite as fortunate this year. Americans are resilient, and I know that together we can rise out of these difficult times. Finally, let’s keep in mind our servicemen and women currently serving overseas, as well as their families back home. It is because of their service and sacrifice that our nation is the greatest in the world. May God bless you and your families, and may God bless the United States of America.
