Read this: That football player with the fake dead girlfriend; ambassador betting; VIPs fly in

On the off-chance your Internet search skills are failing you in your attempt to read more stories about Manti Te’o, we’re here to help. Our colleague Paul Farhi notes that the too-poignant-to-check-out story of the Notre Dame star’s (non-existent) dead girlfriend story is a failure of journalistic skepticism. Meanwhile, Te’o claims he was the victim of the hoax. Football pundits wonder if this will hurt him in the NFL draft. D.C. athletes react on Twitter. And another player claims he met the fake girlfriend — what?

In other news: Irish bookmakers are taking bets on who’ll be the next US ambassadors to Ireland and the UK. The odds for Anna Wintour are better than for, say, Conan O’Brien. . . . Dulles may have to dedicate a runway for all the private jets bearing VIPs headed to the inauguration.

Looking for an inaugural ball ticket? Still plenty on sale for unofficial balls

There are plenty of unsold tickets for inaugural parties — which, depending on your perspective, is either kind of a bummer or a hidden blessing.

Not, of course, the president’s inaugural balls at the Convention Center: The few tickets available to the general public were snapped up in just hours; as many as 40,000 people are expected to cram into the two official balls.

But tickets for dozens of other inaugural-themed parties and galas are still available, which reflects less interest in President Obama’s second inauguration — or could be a gift for party-goers looking to have a good time.

In other news: Katherine Webb gets job thanks to BCS game spotlight

• Being blatantly ogled on national TV has its upside. Katherine Webb, the girlfriend of Alabama quarterback A.J. McCarron who stole the show at the BCS game when ESPN’s Brent Musburger gushed endlessly over her beauty, has parlayed her instafame into a paying gig: She’ll work as “Inside Edition” on-camera Super Bowl correspondent, the show announced Wednesday. Meanwhile, Musburger told a TMZ cameraman he didn’t see anything inappropriate about his romantic soliloquy, though ESPN apologized for it: “Individuals say what individuals say, and corporations do what corporations do.”

“You can speculate I suppose. But sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.”

Anthony Weiner when asked by Crain’s New York Business why, if not actually mulling a political comeback — such as, say, running for NYC mayor this year — he recently reserved the Internet address “AnthonyWeiner2013.com.” Nice! Someone’s been brushing up on his Freud.
