Veterans

Congressman Dreier strongly supports veterans’ programs and has consistently voted to provide our veterans with the benefits they deserve. There are over 23 million veterans in this country and nearly 2 million of them live in California. They have served our nation honorably and we must ensure that they are treated with the respect and care that they deserve.

Since 2001, Congress has increased the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) budget by over 100 percent. Specifically, Congress has provided $94 billion for the VA for fiscal year 2009, including an increase in funding for mental and health care services, substance abuse treatment and readjustment care for veterans. This funding will also be used to increase the gas mileage reimbursement for VA patients, expand assistance for homeless veterans, boost medical and prosthetic research and provide a 3.9 percent pay raise for all members of the armed forces.

Congress also provided funding for the VA to hire 2,000 additional claims processors and modernize the VA’s claims processing system to ensure the accurate and timely delivery of benefits to veterans and their families. To make home loans more accessible to veterans, Congress improved home loan refinancing options and raised the maximum VA home loan guarantee. To assist veterans who have recently returned from combat adjust to civilian life, Congress expanded education benefits under the Montgomery G.I. program to give veterans a full, four-year college education. To help military retirees, Congress prohibited any increase in veterans’ prescription drug co-pays and enrollment fees. I am proud to have voted for these critical improvements to veterans’ benefits.
