Dreier Votes for Defense Authorization Measure

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman David Dreier (R-CA) voted today in support of H.R. 1540, the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2012.  This bill authorizes continued funding for our troops deployed abroad.  H.R. 1540, which ensures American troops overseas in Afghanistan, Iraq and around the world have the equipment, resources, and training they need to successfully complete their missions and return home safely, was approved with overwhelming bipartisan support 322-96.

“Our brave men and women in uniform serving and defending us at home and abroad deserve the full backing of Congress and the American people,” Dreier said.  “This bipartisan legislation ensures that our troops and their families have the equipment, resources, training, and time they need to successfully complete their missions and return home.”

H.R. 1540 authorizes $553 billion for the Department of Defense’s base budget, including $119 billion for overseas contingency operations.  The measure also authorizes resources and equipment to protect our troops, including $2.8 billion to develop technologies to defeat improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and $3.2 billion for Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles.  In addition, H.R. 1540 authorizes a 1.6 percent pay increase for Armed Forces personnel, ensures that troops returning from deployment have sufficient time at home and enhances treatment for mental health and traumatic brain injuries.
