The veterans who have defended the freedom of our country deserve our gratitude and support.

During my service in Congress, I have consistently supported legislation to improve health services and retirement benefits for veterans. The Veterans Administration Medical Centers in Birmingham and Tuscaloosa provide outstanding care, and I am proud to support the services they provide on behalf of our veterans.

The construction of the Alabama National Cemetery in Montevallo is very significant for Alabama's veteran population. It is only fitting that those in Alabama who have served our country with courage and dedication to duty are afforded a final resting place near their loved ones. The site is particularly attractive because of its tie in with the American Village, historic Montevallo, and the beautiful rolling landscape of the Shoal Creek Valley. It was an honor for me to be able to work to authorize the construction of the cemetery.

The Sixth District has always shown its gratitude for the service of our veterans.  Some of the events that I have had the privilege to participate in include the Birmingham Honor Flight to the World War Two Memorial in Washington; A Hero's Welcome at the Lakeshore Foundation for veterans injured in Iraq and Afghanistan; the Blue Star Salute at American Village; the Silver Star ceremony for Pfc. Johnathon Millican of County Line; and a Tribute to World War II veterans at the Birmingham VA Medical Center.
