  2. Shocked and saddened by the tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut today. Our hearts go out to all those affected by this terrible act of violence.
  3. I was very happy to work with Discovery Books, the Salvation Army and the City of Holyoke to help further the education of area students. Today, Discovery Books donated a truckload of 10,000 children's story books to the local Salvation Army and the City of Holyoke’s Early Literacy Program.
  4. I am joining with more than 100 of my colleagues in the House to send a message to Speaker Boehner: cuts to Social Security have no place in a debt deal.

Social Security is an independent, self-financed program which does not contribute to the federal deficit. Worker contributions fund Social Security benefits, and all benefits are paid out of its own trust fund -- not general revenues.

Like & share if you agree that protecting Social Security should always be a priority.
  5. The Department of Health & Human Services announced Monday that, by closing the Medicare donut hole, the new health care law has saved people in Massachusetts who have Medicare Part D coverage more than 86 million dollars.

In 2013, the Affordable Care Act will provide those in the donut hole with further savings, as discounts rise to 53 percent of the cost of brand name drugs and 21 percent of the cost of generic drugs and by 2020, the gap in coverage will be fully closed.
  6. On World AIDS Day, I join with communities here in the United States and around the world in remembering those who have lost their lives to this disease and pledging my support to the fight for an AIDS-free generation.

We have made great strides towards this goal, developed lifesaving new treatments, and yet we must redouble our efforts. We must partner with the international community to find new ways of treating AIDS and preventing the spread of HIV. We must work to end the stigma and discrimination that HIV-positive people too often face. We must end the AIDS epidemic.
  7. Very happy to be at UMass Amherst today for the 'Building Just and Sustainable Communities' symposium.

  8. The Social Security Administration has announced that beginning on Monday, November 19, 2012 all Social Security offices’ hours of operation will be reduced by 30 minutes every day and will be open from 9:00AM-3:00PM. In addition, beginning...
in January 2013, all offices will close at noon on Wednesdays.

Luckily, most Social Security services do not require a visit to a local office. Many services, including applying for retirement, disability or Medicare benefits, signing up for direct deposit, replacing a Medicare card, obtaining a proof of income letter or informing the Social Security Administration of a change of address or telephone number can be done online at www.socialsecurity.gov or by dialing 1-800-772-1213.
