High School Art Competition
My office is a proud partipant of "An
Artistic Discovery," the annual congressional high school art
competition.
The winning artwork is hung in a corridor of the United States
Capitol for one year, and the winning student is awarded a $5,000
scholarship to Savannah College of Art and Design in Georgia. The
Artistic Honors Scholarship is renewable and is applicable to
tuition at the college. Winning students may also submit test
scores and/or portfolios for higher scholarship consideration.
The winning student and a guest also are invited to attend a
special opening exhibition in Washington, DC. The reception is
usually in June, and members of the art community are there to meet
the winning students from around the country. Previous attendees
include Tom Cruise, Dean Cain, Billy Baldwin, Sarah Jessica Parker
and Joe Pantoliano.
This contest provides an excellent opportunity to recognize the
rich artistic talent of high school students. More than 200
congressional offices usually participate in the contest. Any high
school student from my district is free to submit an entry to this
contest, and you don't have to be in an art class to
participate.
The competition is open only to high school students, but
exceptions can be made for schools that have grades 7-12 in one
building. Artwork must be two-dimensional (no masks, sculptures,
etc.), no larger than 30 by 30 inches framed, and no more than four
inches in depth. The following mediums are accepted: paintings,
drawings, collages, prints (lithographs, silk screens, monotypes,
woodcuts, and intaglio methods); mixed media; computer graphics;
and photography. All artwork must be original. Any entry which has
been reproduced from an existing photo, painting, or any other work
is a violation of contest rules and will not be permitted.
Formal contest rules are typically released each March, and
entries are usually due to my office by late April. If you would
like more information,
please call my district office at 800-447-0529.
