Stark Wins Best of Congress Working Families Award

Recognized by Working Mother Media and Corporate Voices for Working Families

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Rep. Pete Stark (D-CA) was recognized by Working Mother Media and Corporate Voices for Working Families with the 2012 Best of Congress award. Stark was honored for his longstanding support for working families through legislation, advocacy, and by setting an example through the family-friendly policies promoted in his Congressional office. Stark and other 2012 winners will be featured in the August/September issue of Working Mother magazine and on WorkingMother.com.

Rep. Stark: "Since my days running a community bank, I've known that people whose home and family lives are respected by their employers are happier, more productive employees. That's why I implemented family-friendly policies then, and it's why I do so in my Congressional office today. It's also why I continue to introduce and fight for legislation that recognizes the importance of supporting children, working families, and expanding the rights of working mothers."

Stark is working to re-introduce his paid family and medical leave bill from a previous Congress, which would provide 12 weeks of paid benefits to most employees. He is also garnering support for his Every Child Deserves a Family Act, H.R. 1681, to provide a federal fix to a flaw in our foster care and adoption systems -- discrimination against prospective parents based on their sexual orientation, marital status, or gender identity -- which too often serves as a barrier between kids and the loving homes they need.

Hon. Patricia Schroeder, former Congresswoman from Colorado and member of Best of Congress steering committee: “These members of Congress stand as role models for what can be accomplished through a combination of legislation and a personal commitment to policies that benefit working families. Through their actions, they are improving the quality of life for working parents nationwide.”
