December 15, 2011
WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Congressman Jason Altmire (PA-04) issued the following statement on the announcement that President Barack Obama signed into law his bill to modernize the American Legion charter. The bill, which passed the House of Representatives this month, is Congressman Altmire's 25th legislative initiative signed into law since taking office in 2007 and the eighth piece of legislation specifically related to veterans and military families.
"This is a very big win for the American Legion and veterans across the country," Congressman Altmire said. "A record-breaking 432 Members of Congress cosponsored this legislation, and now it is law. Thanks to such enormous bipartisan support, the Legion will now be able to devote more time to supporting the needs of America's veterans. I thank all of my colleagues for supporting this bill and look forward to working on more pieces of legislation that can garner the same type of bipartisan support to move our country forward."
Prior to final passage of the bill, Congressman Altmire spoke on the House floor about his bill and the need to modernize the American Legion Charter. To view the floor speech, please click here.
