(WASHINGTON, D.C.) -- Today, U.S. Congressman Jason Altmire (PA-04) joined Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato to launch the North Park Lake Ecosystem Restoration Project. Altmire, Onorato and officials from McCandless, Pine and Hampton townships held a valve turning ceremony to begin draining the lake for sediment removal.

Altmire has been a longtime advocate for the North Park Lake Restoration Project and has taken numerous steps to advance the project in recent years.

“After years of work by federal and local officials, it is great to begin the restoration of North Park Lake,” Altmire said. “As a longtime resident of the North Hills, I know first hand what a valuable asset this lake is to our community. These restoration efforts will help to return North Park Lake to its former glory and will help to ensure that local families can enjoy it for years to come.”

Altmire has consistently worked to advance the North Park Lake Restoration Project. Altmire helped to provide the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers with the $5 million in federal funding that it needs to carry out the project. This year, Altmire also included a provision in the FY 2010 Energy and Water Appropriations Act that will make North Park Lake eligible for additional federal funding, if it is needed to complete the project.
