Altmire Statement on President Obama's Address to Congress
February 24, 2009
(WASHINGTON, D.C.) -- U.S. Congressman Jason Altmire (PA-04) tonight made the following statement on President Barack Obama’s address to the Joint Session of Congress.
“Tonight, President Obama laid out the challenges our country is facing and the hard decisions that lie ahead as we continue working to create jobs and revive our nation’s economy. What the President made absolutely clear, and what every American should have full confidence in, is the fact that despite our current challenges, America’s best days still lie ahead.
“I was pleased to hear President Obama’s continued emphasis on restoring government accountability and promoting fiscal responsibility. The economic recovery package that was signed into law last week includes unprecedented levels of transparency and oversight and will create good-paying jobs by investing in our schools, infrastructure, and other national priorities. These principles should continue to govern all of our actions as we move forward.
“As we work to save and create good-paying jobs in the coming days, I agree that we must also make progress in addressing three key issues that are critical to America’s long-term growth: making health care more affordable, increasing America’s energy independence and strengthening our nation’s education system. I look forward to working with the President and with my Republican and Democratic colleagues to make progress in these key areas.”
