Altmire Statement on Final Passage of Economic Stimulus Package
(Washington, DC) - U.S. Congressman Jason Altmire (PA-4) today issued the following statement on the House's passage of the economic stimulus package. The legislation passed tonight and is now headed to the president for his signature.
"This bill includes a tax cut for more than 130 million families, providing tax relief of up to $600 per individual and $1,200 per married couple, plus an additional $300 per child. Recovery rebate checks could be sent as early as mid-May. Economists estimate that each dollar of broad-based tax cuts leads to $1.26 in economic growth.
"Amidst the recent crush of negative statistics about our economy, Americans finally got some good news today. After working together in a bi-partisan fashion, Congress has sent an economic stimulus package to the President's desk that will put money in the hands of American consumers and jumpstart our slowing economy.
"I am proud of the fact that we did the right thing and worked to extend the rebates to veterans and seniors. Small businesses will also see tax relief that allows them to invest in new plants and equipment, which will help create new jobs and boost the economy.
"I hope that by providing this infusion of funds to everyday Americans and small businesses, we can turn our economy around."
