Foreign Affairs

In the area of foreign affairs, I am focused on protecting freedom and democracy as well as promoting free-trade.

Protecting U.S. Sovereignty

As cochairman of the House Sovereignty Caucus, I am committed to protecting both the legal and territorial concept memorialized in the Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution.

Simply defined, sovereignty is the ability of a people to determine their own political and national destiny. Just as political power has been driven over the years from state to federal government, today influence is being stripped from our federal government and being granted to international institutions.

I will protect and defend our nation from those who would allow our fate to be determined by bureaucrats at the international level.

More and more, influence and power is being stripped from our federal government and being granted to international institutions.

Promoting Democracy Around the World

On a recent trip to Myanmar (Burma), I was honored to meet that country’s opposition leader, Aung San Suu Kyi. The Nobel Prize Winner is an extraordinary woman who has led the fight to bring democracy to her country. She has paid a high price, spending 15 years under house arrest. She is an inspiration to me, and to millions of people around the world.

Promoting Global Free Trade

I believe free-trade between countries is the fastest way to create wealth for both partners. I have taken trips overseas to learn more about the benefits of free trade. On one recent trip, I visited Azerbaijan, India, Thailand, and Austria.

I was particularly interested in hearing that officials in India would like to buy natural gas and coal from American energy producers. America has vast untapped natural resources -- enough to make us not only energy independent, but a net exporter, as well.
