Senate Page Program

Each year, I sponsor two or three Wisconsin students to serve as Senate Pages. Each appointment is for one term: Fall, Spring, or Summer. Eligibility begins at the completion of the sophomore year and ends in August following the junior year, so interested students should apply in the spring of their sophomore year.

Pages play an important role in the day-to-day operation of the Senate. Their duties consist primarily of delivery of correspondence and legislative material within the Congressional complex. Other duties include taking messages for Members, calling them to the phone, preparing the chamber for Senate sessions and carrying bills and amendments to the desk. A rotation system is practiced so that every Page has an opportunity to experience the various areas of service.

While serving as pages, young people continue their high school education by attending the U.S. Senate Page School, which is in the Page dormitory at Webster Hall in Northeast Washington, two blocks from the Hart Senate Office Building. A Page's academic day begins at 6:15 am. Classes extend until 9:45 am, unless the Senate convenes at an earlier hour. Pages are paid on the basis of an annual salary of $20,491. Staff at the dormitory includes four resident proctors (who reside within the building) and the Program Director and Assistant who work at Webster Hall during business hours. Two floors encompass the living quarters, one of which is designated for young women, the other for young men. Monthly room and board payments are deducted from the pages' monthly salaries. The cost is $600 per month, which includes breakfast and evening meals, 7 days a week. There is an initial security deposit of $250.00 that is necessary before checking into the Senate Page Dorm and is refundable if no damages occur.

If you wish to be considered for a Senate page position for the 2011-2012 school year, please contact the Appleton office for additional information and to obtain a Senate Page Application.
