NAM: Representative Barrow Votes to Protect Manufacturing Jobs, Opposes Costly Federal Regulations PDF Print

Washington, D.C., April 11, 2011 – The National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) commends Representative John Barrow (GA-12) for voting to prevent the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) from regulating greenhouse gas (GHG) emissionsunder the Clean Air Act, which would stifle job creation and economic growth.  Representative Barrow’s vote on the Energy Tax Prevention Act demonstrates his understanding of the negative impact the EPA’s costly and burdensome regulatory agenda has on Georgia and America.

This legislation passed the House of Representatives on April 7, by a wide margin of 255-172 votes. Introduced by House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Fred Upton (R-MI), the bill attracted bipartisan support from leaders like Representative Barrow, who recognize that overregulation causes economic uncertainty.

“We are grateful that Representative Barrow recognized the stakes and voted to protect jobs and Georgia’s manufacturers,” said NAM President and CEO Jay Timmons. “During these tough economic times, it is important to have leaders in Washington like Representative Barrow, who will stand against proposed new regulations that will raise the cost of goods and services, hurting manufacturers’ ability to compete in the global marketplace.”

The United States is the world’s largest manufacturing economy, producing 21 percent of all globally manufactured products. As consumers of nearly one-third of our nation’s energy, manufacturers in the United States support a comprehensive, federal climate policy within a framework that will cause no economic harm, while granting sufficient time to deploy low-carbon technologies.

The NAM will continue to work with Congress and the Administration to stop these stringent, overreaching regulations and promote sound economic and environmental policies that are in the best interest of manufacturers, consumers and our economy.
