Pathology Laboratory Showcases Cutting-Edge Technology Practices

Washington, D.C.Congressman John Barrow (GA-12) visited Candler/St. Joseph’s Hospital today to examine the critical and expanding role that laboratory testing plays in patient care.  Barrow was greeted and given a tour of Candler/St. Joseph’s state-of-the-art laboratory facilities by Anthony Hejka, MD, FCAP.

The tour focused on the vital role of pathologists in health care, and included a demonstration of how pathologists use cutting-edge technology and laboratory tests to screen for cancer and precancerous lesions.  Tour participants also discussed the growth of personalized health care and the important role that pathologists can play as a diagnostic consultant for patient care.

“It was fascinating to see the different diagnostic tests that are conducted on a daily basis right here at Candler/St. Joseph’s Laboratory,” said Barrow following the tour.  “I think everyone would benefit from a better understanding of the growing importance of pathologists and the clinical laboratory in the health care system.”

“The tour demonstrated how the laboratory’s role is a vital component of patient care from diagnosis to treatment.  Using state-of-the-art technology, pathologists can look at individual specimens and laboratory tests, provide a rapid diagnosis, and help guide patient treatment, often without any surgical intervention at all,” said Dr. Hejka.  “We are honored that Representative Barrow would take time out of his busy schedule to visit our laboratory.”
