Washington, DC - 12^th District Congressman John Barrow (D-GA) announced today that the Center for Tropical and Emerging Global Diseases at the University of Georgia has been awarded a grant in the amount of $1,472,000 from the National Institutes of Health (NIH).  This grant will help fund university research into the cellular biology of parasites.

 "Parasitic and other infectious diseases are among the leading causes of death worldwide," Congressman Barrow said.  "Through the National Institutes of Health initiatives and the research teams at UGA, our nation will continue to be a leader in scientific and medical research."

UGA's Center for Tropical and Emerging Global Diseases will receive $294,400 each year for the five year project period.  Using these funds, Dr. Boris Striepen, Associate Professor of Cellular Biology at UGA, will research his proposal, "Biology of the Apicomplexan Plastid."
