Savannah/Hilton Head International to Receive $350,000 Grant for Runway Improvements PDF Print

Money will be used to improve and upgrade runway safety and aircraft guidance equipment

Washington, DC - Savannah Congressman John Barrow (12th District) announced today that Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport has been awarded a $350,000 grant from the Department of Transportation and the Federal Aviation Administration.

The money will be used to help improve the airport's runway safety area by relocating the existing localizer (a runway guidance and navigation device) for Runway #36.  Currently, the localizer is only 400 feet from the start of Runway #18. At the time of the original installation, this distance met runway safety area requirements. However, changes to airport standards since then have caused this to be outdated. The localizer will now be relocated at least 1,000 feet from the runway in order to comply with current runway safety area requirements.

"Improving runway safety ought to be one of the top priorities for any airport," Barrow said.  "I'm pleased that Savannah's airport will now have the money it needs to keep up with new and improved safety standards to protect our airports."
