Today, U. S Senator Charles E. Schumer urged the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to swiftly address the issues that the Maine-Endwell School District and Binghamton City School District are experiencing in obtaining FEMA public assistance for flood-ravaged structures. Schumer called on FEMA to release the previously-committed disaster funds of $39,862,108 to the Binghamton City School District to build a new elementary school and replace its contents, after MacArthur Elementary School in the City's south side was destroyed by record flooding in the wake of Tropical Storm Lee. Additionally, Schumer urged FEMA to reevaluate the assistance Maine-Endwell School District is slated to receive for their maintenance shop and provide the amount initially pledged. School administrators worked diligently with local, state, and federal entities to prepare and submit all emergency funding applications. One year later, no resolution has been reached.
