Reeves’ Photo, “Grandpa Time” will be displayed in U.S. Capitol

Washington—At an awards ceremony this week at Lehman High School, U.S. Congressman Lloyd Doggett presented senior, Sarah Reeves of Martindale, with the 2011 Congressional Art Competition Award.  Reeves, the daughter of Jay and Carol Reeves of Martindale, submitted the photo from her senior concentration portfolio entitled, “Rural America,” which depicts images of her life growing up in Central Texas.  Reeves, who will attend the Art Institute in Austin this fall to pursue photography, will receive two free plane tickets to travel to Washington, D.C. to attend an awards ceremony on June 22.  Her photograph will hang in the U.S. Capitol for the next year.  Her art teacher at Lehman is Debra Flynn.

“There’s something comforting and purely Texas about Sarah’s photo of her grandfather’s old Ford pickup truck,” said Rep. Doggett.  “I appreciate that she seized an opportunity to share such a special piece of her life, and look forward to visitors from all over the country having the opportunity to view what this talented young woman has captured on film.” 

Each spring, the Congressional Institute sponsors a nationwide high school visual art competition to recognize and encourage artistic talent in the nation.  Since it began in 1982, more than 650,000 high school students have participated.
