WASHINGTON - Continuing his mission to end the genocide in Sudan, U.S. Rep. Bill Pascrell, Jr. (D-NJ-08) today voted to pass H.R. 3127, the "Darfur Peace and Accountability Act of 2006." The legislation sanctions Sudanese officials guilty of genocide and authorizes additional assistance to the African Union Mission in Sudan. H.R. 3127 passed the House by a vote of 416-3.
Pascrell, a cosponsor of HR 3127 and a member of the Congressional Caucus on Sudan will participate in a Darfur awareness rally in Montclair this Sunday, April 9 in Watchung Plaza at 2:00pm. Joining Pascrell will be Governor Jon S. Corzine, Montclair Mayor Ed Remsen, the Essex County Interfaith Coalition on Darfur, the Darfur Rehabilitation Project, the Darfur Campaign for American World Jewish Services, the African Division of Human Rights Watch, Help Darfur Now, the United Jewish Communities of MetroWest, and Church World Services.
"I am proud to represent a community that is vigorously campaigning to create awareness and inspire change in Darfur," stated Pascrell. "The activism that will hit the streets of Montclair will undoubtedly accomplish both. It will further encourage the type of action that Congress took today when it passed the Darfur Peace and Accountability Act. As a member of the Congressional Caucus on Sudan and a cosponsor of the Darfur Peace and Accountability Act, I am excited for the opportunity to rally in unity with a diverse crowd of community and religious leaders committed to ending the genocide in Sudan."
