Republican Doomsday Plan: Cave on Taxes, Vote ‘Present’

gty john boehner jt 121202 wblog Republican Doomsday Plan: Cave on Taxes, Vote Present

Republicans are seriously considering a Doomsday Plan if fiscal cliff talks collapse entirely.  It’s quite simple:  House Republicans would allow a vote on extending the Bush middle class tax cuts (the bill passed in August by the Senate) and offer the President nothing more:  no extension of the debt ceiling, nothing on unemployment, nothing on closing loopholes.  Congress would recess for the holidays and the president would face a big battle early in the year over the debt ceiling.

Two senior Republican elected officials tell me this doomsday plan is becoming the most likely scenario.  A top GOP House  leadership aide confirms the plan is under consideration, but says Speaker Boehner has made no decision on whether to pursue it.

Under one variation of this Doomsday Plan, House Republicans would allow a vote on extending only the middle class tax cuts and Republicans, to express disapproval at the failure to extend all tax cuts, would vote “present” on the bill, allowing it to pass entirely on Democratic votes.

Infographic: The Fiscal Cliff

By doing this, Republicans avoid taking blame for tax increases on 98 percent of income tax payers.  As one senior Republican in Congress told me, “You don’t take a hostage you aren’t willing to shoot.”  Republicans aren’t willing to kill the middle class tax cuts, even if extending them alone will make it harder to later extend tax cuts on the wealthy.

Rep. Tom Cole, R-Okla., an influential conservative House Republican, is already on record supporting extending the middle class tax cuts — with or without the upper income tax cuts.  On Sunday, he said Republicans should embrace the extension of the middle class tax cuts and take credit for it.

“That’s a victory, not a loss,” Cole said on This Week with George Stephanopoulos.  ”And then we’re still free to try and fight over higher rates, offering revenue, which the Speaker has put on the table.”

Last week, Boehner said he disagreed with Cole.  But now a version of what Cole has called for looks more and more likely to happen.

Still unclear under this plan is what would happen to the automatic defense cuts — “sequestration” — scheduled to go into effect on January 1 without a deficit deal.  During the campaign, the President promised the cuts would not happen.  As part of the deal to allow the House vote on taxes, those automatic defense cuts could be put off for a year.

“Rep. Tom Cole, R-Okla., an influential conservative House Republican…”

Excuse me for pointing out the obvious, but the moment he endorsed tax increases as the answer to out of control spending, he ceased to be a conservative -just as a guard dog that licks the face of a burglar has ceased to be a guard dog.

cnd…you’re a total tool. Clueless. The wealthy pay by far a greater percentage of the total taxes paid, but you and your president think they’re not paying enough. Breathtaking. Obama should get a taste of his own medicine and force his hand on a bill that actually cuts our nation-killing entitlements. Obamazombies just don’t care about the future of the Republic.

Posted by: electpatriots | December 3, 2012, 10:06 am 10:06 am

obama refused to address the significant spending problem with his proposal. It is not only bad faith bargaining but it is disasterous for all of us. Ignore these huge deficits caused by entitlement and welfare spending and you doom us all—democrat, republican and independents. It is a reality that you cannot ignore for long. This is an issue of financial survival as a nation.

But Boehner himself voted to increase the debt ceiling a few times since 2002. Oh! We see the times have changed or so he might aptly argue. Repubs – a rare and rabid breed!

How can the 3rd paragraph say that the GOP is allowing the Democrats to vote (and presumably pass) the extension of the tax cuts, but then the first sentence of the next paragraph say they’re doing so “avoid taking blame for tax increases on 98 percent of income tax payers.”?

Where’s the increase come from if the bill that passes keeps the current rates on those 98%?

Maybe this would be the end of GOP so that America can move forward again. May the will of God (not the GOP one) be done

Yeah, get rid of the loop holds that most Americans know about and use. The super rich
have new tax loopholes that only THEY can qualify for and we shall never see or used by us.
That’s why the GOP is all for cutting these loopholes instead of taxing them.

Republicans “ARE” doomsday! They’d sooner send the country into another recession, which, ironically would be created again by Republicans! All this just to avoid having to tax the super wealthy a few bucks more. Pathetic.

How could it be a “doomsday” to let it go – afterall – For years and including the campaign – the DEMS and Obama preached that we need to return to the Clinton Era rates – after all – it was economic paradise – so let the rates for everyone go the Clinton rates and based on history – we should soon be back in the :Garden of Eden” – right?>

The Republicans a simply embarrassing themselves at this point. Every fiscal cliff article on the web has detailed information on Obama’s plan (with numbers), and John Boehner has offered only a vague description of eliminating some loopholes. Where is the Republicans leadership? John Boehner and Mitch McConnell can’t possibly be the sharpest minds they have. It’s time for someone in the Republican party to step forward and replace these morons. Trust in Obama and the Democrats will continue to grow when compared to the incompetence of the Congress. Obama’s approval rating is over 50%, the Congress is more like 12%. It’s easy to see why, President Obama and the Democrats are the only ones willing to vote for extending the Middle Class tax cuts.

Posted by: TEAMSWITCHER | December 3, 2012, 10:30 am 10:30 am

It is so so so sad that Congress is playing with our daily lives, every single day of the year for Decades. Millions of People are just getting by with what they bring home with their checks, and many come up short month after month and live day to day, so many use food banks to try to feed their families. BUT with this “FIscal CLiff” looming on the middle class and the poor we will once again get screwed and live off less than we do now. All while the rich folks wallow in their money, pay bills with out thinking, stock their fridges/freezers and pantries with expensive food.

Heaven forbid they pay a little bit more to help ease the burden on the real working people of this country. “GREED” should be the new American Motto………..not the Land of Opportunity.

By voting ‘present’ they’re letting the Obama take his fiscal agenda to it’s ultimate end. If his vision of big-bigger-biggest government will work, then what’s the problem?

Why would a Democrat protest Republicans getting out of the way?

Could it be that some Democrats know their policies cripple the economy, and they’ve gotten away with it by blaming Republicans every time? The Community Reinvestment Act, pushed by Democrats, led to the housing crash in 2008 -yet they blamed Republicans for it. Now the Republicans are stepping aside and saying to the Democrats “This one’s on you”. and Democrats are balking. Intersting that they suddenly don’t want what they’ve been saying they wanted all along.

they use every loophole and credit they can get their greedy little hands on, using the
long form tax return. We’re lucky if they pay 13% of these taxes, all the while you and I pay 28%
taxes! Get an education by stop brainwashing yourself with FAUXNEWS.

The republicans should unload Boehner and McConnell as their top leaders and replace them with some people interested in helping America. They may have to go outside the party to find someone.

Posted by: George Thompson | December 3, 2012, 10:41 am 10:41 am

“I pledge allegiance” has taken on a whole different meaning with the Republicans.
I truly wonder if the majority of constituents of the respective districts represented by the staunch right agree completely with the hubris shown by Boehner and others.
The recent election should carry some degree of clarity to these myopic representatives, but no, the idea of conceding defeat conflicts with their self defined image of their superiority in all things.
Boehner, it isn’t about you, your owners, or wealth accumulation. It’s about you seeing America as the voting population of this country sees it. Now, go about doing the “People’s business” and hold your nose while doing so.

How are tax cuts going to help the deficit? And why all of the talk about protecting medicare before the election and now all of the talk about cutting it? I thought the democrats won?

Posted by: Jane Peters | December 3, 2012, 10:43 am 10:43 am

Trust me when i say…that either a ‘deal’ will be done at the end of the year OR the GOP will be the ones who ‘go over the cliff’. And I think that even if they do a ‘deal’…they just might implode anyway. And what STILL AMAZES me is the ‘lack of stories – and more importantly substantive debate – on Grover Norquist…and his ‘political extortion’ tactics. How do people who live in a ‘democracy’ not think that what he does is COMPLETELY AGAINST those principles? And yet MORONS ON THE RIGHT…so willingly and shallowly argue about the ‘constitutionality’ of every other thing under the sun.

You’d think liberals would be doing back-flips over this. The Republican plan would, in effect, give the Democrats back their super-majority -and all we hear from the left is moaning and complaining.

It doesn’t really matter in the short run whether they cut a deal or not. If spending is not significantly reduced it is only a matter of time—a short time—before the bottom drops out. Creditors will stop loaning us money because they see our becoming insolvent. There will be no warning when this happens and panic will set in among the democrats as they see the inevitable coming and their inability to cover it up even with the MSM.

Yea Dem without a Clue, like you don’t put down the tax deduction if you own a house on your Tax Form. Like you don’t take the credit for your children. Obama didn’t promise anything, except everyone in this country needs to contribute. And if you can (without a breath) say I bet you 10,000 or I will give 5 million to charity for something, then you can pay just a little more so the checkout clerk at the JC Penny or Walmart can keep a little extra to pay for bills, food, medicine, a decent holiday. Gotta love these right wingers.

Today it is tax the other guy and spend, baby, spend as if there is no tomorrow. Those of us old enough to know better know that soon it will be ‘payday’ for these irresponsible ways and it won’t be pretty for any of us. Those of you used to government checks or handouts won’t be getting any. The landing will be hard and you will have no excuse when your whinning inevitably comes. Obamacare will further raise taxes, (3.) Republicans will be blamed, (4.) federal spending will sky-rockets AND (5.) we will be having this conversation in 12-18 months when the country is in further debt and needs ONLY an immediate $200 TRILLION to make the whole problem go away.

The government will always have ‘money’ for them. The EBT cards will have their accounts refilled without so much as a hickup, Section 8 housing won’t have to worry about the rent, Obamaphones will continue to work. Government workers will get paid on time every payday. Tax-consumers won’t notice fiscal problems because the Democrat party needs their votes.

It’s the taxpayers who will get the screws put to them. The taxpayers will get shaken down for every asset they own; their 401(k), their IRA, their investment portfolio, their house, their car -everything will be up for grabs until the tax-payer is in jail or transformed into one of the tax consumers.

Dealing with the deficit isn’t that tough. Raise some taxes, cut some spending. IF you aren’t willing to do both then you are part of the problem. President Obama understands this, Republicans don’t.

The requested tax increases are modest. Spending cuts are in the President’s plan too. It has to start some where and so far the Republicans are only interested in one side of the formula. Everyone knows, Democrats included, that spending needs to be reduced. I’d start with reducing the paychecks to Congress if they can’t start acting like adults.

Posted by: Nobland | December 3, 2012, 11:17 am 11:17 am

Since the obama administration sees everything in terms of more taxes and no spending cuts then expect 401(k)s and IRA to be taxed. That is a huge source of potential revenue that only gets taxed at withdrawals and not accumulations. If you think that will only be limited to the rich then you are in for a big surprise. Too much of that belongs to the middle class and we know how much the democrats love the middle class(revenue source).

We didn’t get into $16 trillion in debt because taxes were too low. We got into this problem with outlandish spending. You realize that they can’t account for where the $1 trillion stimulus money went? The propoesd tax increases aren’t going to make a dent in the debt and are sold under the guise of punishing the rich. If they’re just for punishing the rich, instead of fixing the debt, then they’re misguided and won’t do squat to fix the problem. A ‘modest’ non-solution is still a non-solution.

They could pass exactly what Obama asked for and it would be a disaster – $1.6T in new/increase taxes, $400B in cuts and no limit on the amount we borrow. The economy would go in a tailspin and it would still be the Republicans fault according to many.

The election was clearly decided by what the American people want. The reason we have a democracy is for the people to be like the shareholders of the country. The politicians serve as the “officers” of the country, and have to serve the shareholders as a primary duty. In this case, the Republican party key team members are snubbing the people by playing inappropriate hardball at a time and with a situation that requires a different tact. There must be decisions made and implemented so that we maximize the economic recovery. Since the people voted for the current Executive administration to guide us, we must as a country be willing to now move forward and protect the interests of the American people.

Looks like the Republicans are taking a page from Obama’s time as a senator. Good for them.

If the Republicans do vote ‘present’, the success and failure of this bill will be on the Democrat’s shoulders. Even though Its a risky move by the Republicans, I think voting ‘present’ will make Democrats solely responsible for the across the board tax hikes.

John Boehner, the weakest Speaker in history, gets in front of the press at every opportunity and whines about leadership from the President.

The President has put a plan on the table with revenues and spending cuts. Where’s Boehner’s, he says he wants cuts but never says what cuts. The man is a joke; I think his head is so fogged up by alcohol he doesn’t even know what day it is.

Jake | December 3, 2012, 11:41 am — He is the Speaker of the House, apparently you have no idea what that means. We have a system of checks and balances that our POTUS has been undermining for some time now. 52% of voters voted for Obama, 48% did not and they deserve representation too.

tmferretti | December 3, 2012, 11:57 am —- The POTUS has nothing on the table yet. What he has is the “my way or highway approach disregarding the constituents that the GOP represents. Time for both sides to realize they have to compromise. Obama needs to be in DC, not running around campaigning. They know what needs to be done, they just have to do it. What I find comical here is we hear nothing about Harry Reid. He has done nothing and it appears he believes he is content with continuing to do nothing. What a waste of human flesh and money.

How about the 98% of Americans that don’t want their taxes to go up by an average of $2200 because the republicans can’t stop rewarding the wealthy. Do they deserve representation?

Posted by: tmferretti | December 3, 2012, 12:05 pm 12:05 pm

Calling this a “move” by the Rep’s is like calling it a “move” when they are in a box where one side of the box is really, really hot and the other side of the box is not so hot. Ok, so they “moved” to the side of the box that is not so hot. There are lower forms of life that would do the same thing.

This is out of 1Kings 3:16-28. Where two women who both had an infant son came to Solomon for a judgement. One of the women claimed that the other, after accidentally smothering her own son while sleeping, had exchanged the two children to make it appear that the living child was hers. The other woman denied this and so both women claimed to be the mother of the living son and said that the dead boy belonged to the other.

King Solomon called for a sword to be brought before him. He declared that there was only one fair solution: the live son must be split in two, each woman receiving half of the child. The liar, in her bitter jealousy, exclaimed, “It shall be neither mine nor yours—divide it!” However, upon hearing this terrible verdict, the boy’s true mother cried out, “Please, My Lord, give her the live child—do not kill him!” Solomon instantly gave the live baby to the real mother, realizing that the true mother’s instincts were to protect her child, while the liar revealed that she did not truly love the child.

Who cares the most about the country?

So I woudl say Boehner is REQUIRED to represent that wouldn’t you? The POTUS, Speaker and Senate Majority Leader need to get together and find common ground. If neither are willing to do that, they need to keep their pie holes shut and quit campaigning. IF they are not willing to negotiate, we need to find those who will. Right now, it appears the GOP is ready to give a little on taxes, so what will the Dems give up?

Posted by: Commonsenseparty | December 3, 2012, 12:13 pm 12:13 pm

Interesting. When your party loses an election, there is majority rule. Many democrats agree with some spending cuts, but you need to keep fluidity of money through the economy to keep people employed. When people who recieve unemployment benefits spend there money on goods and services, it keeps the employed…. EMPLOYED. Government does have some serious flaws, but it also provides some very essential services

Posted by: TV | December 3, 2012, 12:13 pm 12:13 pm

I know in the previous round of negotiations, Pres. Obama put forward major spending cuts. I expect the same will be done this time. But the Bush program put forward major tax cuts, coupled with major expenditures put on the lay-away plan. We can’t lay away any more and the privileged no longer should be a protected class. Job #1 is to roll back those tax cuts for the wealthy. It also makes sense to have a means tested threshold for the home interest deduction, especially wealthy with multiple homes. Other deductions have to be questioned also and means tested where appropriate. Job #2 is to eliminate fraud, waste, loopholes and cut spending and tweak entitlements, and improve the effectiveness and efficiency of government. People have the right to expect fairness in both the private and the public sectors.

Spending this country into bankruptcy is not an expression of love nor is it prudent. You will destroy all of us not just the spenders. If there were a way to secede I would be advocating it but the spenders want as many tax payers as they can to pay for the takers of big government largesse. The spenders want huge government that takes you from cradle to grave and so far it has been proven that that kind of government is too expensive to maintain for long. It is doomed to failure.

This is not a battle between democrats and republicans; it’s a battle between moderate republicans and the conservatives who are so shortsighted and opinionated that they won’t compromise on anything.

The republicans forget what happened in 1936 when they did the same thing and put their ideology ahead of their country. They were voted out of office never to return to any real power for fifty years.

The American people know who is holding up any progress. If we go over the cliff the republicans deserve the blame and will pay the price in November 2014.

Why is the sole discussion on raising taxes and none on reduced spending? The President promised a balanced approach that included $2.50 – $3.00 in spending cuts for every $1.00 in increased taxes. Where are the $4 trillion in spending cuts to go along with the $1.6 trillion in increased taxes? Instead he offers an ill defined $400 billion in spending cuts. So much for a balanced approach to solving the fiscal problems we have.

Firstly, on so-called *entitlements* – - Social Security has not contributed one penny to the debt, or deficit. The only problem with Medicare/Medicaid is rising medical costs.
What has created the immense debt, was two totally unbudgeted wars; the two-unfunded Bush Tax-Cuts, unfunded Medicare Part D… all in-place when Pres Obama took office.
The Recession itself has contributed to the debt, because more unemployed equals less revenue.
As for Pres Obama, Government-spending has actually decreased since he took office, while at the same time, he actually put the wars, etc in the budget.
Wake up already, if you actually care for America. Stop following GOP talking points!

What’s more they aren’t even trying to hide it anymore.>>>As one senior Republican in Congress told me, “You don’t take a hostage you aren’t willing to shoot.” Republicans aren’t willing to kill the middle class tax cuts, even if extending them alone will make it harder to later extend tax cuts on the wealthy.<<< So it would seem that they were willing to kill the credit raing AND the unemployed last time.

Republicans now need to put their spending cuts on the table.

Then we negotiate.

I think the ball is clearly in the Republican’s court. It would be a shame if they abandon DC to go home and campaign without at least beginning to negotiate a solution.

Posted by: sameagain | December 3, 2012, 1:18 pm 1:18 pm

COMMONSENSE PARTY

The fiscal cliff is the fiscal cliff for two reasons:

1. Massive tax increase to 98% of our citizens and 97% of small businesses. The republicans are going to cause this by insisting the upper 2% is hurting so bad they need them too. This will shrink the market place and cause more layoffs.

2. The massive spending cuts in the sequester which will cause millions to lose their job and further shrink the market. It might lower the deficit for two minutes then when the tax base shrinks the deficit will sky rocket again.

What is the difference if the spending cuts come from the sequester or the cuts the republicans want. We will still go over the cliff

I’m talking about those cuts from Ryan’s budget because the republicans, including the people on this blog, have never said once what and how much of a cut they want.

Everything in the President’s offer is specific and on the table. The problem is the republicans whine and moan but have not submitted a plan that can be decided on to this day.

It would be nice to not have to raise anyones taxes, but you can’t ignore the fact to just cut spending to balance the budget would most likely lead to a Depression. Their is blame for both sides for getting us in this mess. Raising rates on the wealthy will not solve everything, but might make the difference between just a Recession and a full blown Depression. Remember that cutting government spending WILL cost jobs, many jobs, and put a significant dent in consumer spending. The wealthy have benefiited most from the wars as well as the stimulus and bailouts, plus rates are now at historical lows for the wealthy. Do they only have time to complain they are being “taxed to death”. Its all about power…and maybe just plain boredom.

This rising deficit has been driven by increased spending!! (Bush and Obama) — According to Obama’s own Office of Management and Budget, since these Bush tax cuts went into effect, federal revenues have increased by some $686 billion… about 39%. The problem is that federal spending has increased MORE THAN TWICE AS MUCH… by some $1.6 trillion… about 76%!!!! ——— So Progressives…. do you believe we can tax out way out of this mess?? Really???

Ah! The old Obama strategy and apparently it worked for him. None of these elected officials shouldn’t be able to vote “present”. It’s not legitimate.

Posted by: newcountryman | December 3, 2012, 1:38 pm 1:38 pm

The republicans can spin all they want but the facts don’t change.

1. They are willing to see the taxes go up on 98% of Americans and 97% of small mom and pop businesses because they think the upper 1% should get the cut too.

2. They insist on cutting spending in the middle of a recession even though they complain that the spending cuts in the sequester will cause major harm to this economy.

3. They won’t compromise because of some stupid ass pledge to lobbyist Grover Norquist.

It might be worth going over the fiscal cliff, take a short term dip in the economy, let the American people throw their “do nothing” idiot asses out of Congress in 2014, then get on with fixing this economy.

Boehner the worse Speaker? I don’t know about that. Tom Foley was the first Speaker of the House since 1862 to be defeated in his re-election campaign for Congress. He then got a cush job as Ambassador to Japan from 1997 to 2001 under Bill Clinton as a consolation prize. He also opposed term limits.

Posted by: dem_without_a_clue | December 3, 2012, 1:49 pm 1:49 pm

This is the silliest debate I have ever witnessed. Taxes are at historic lows. For all the talk about spending being too high, the opposite is true: taxes are too low for the services Americans want (Social Security, Medicare, etc.). The republican approach has been to starve the government of revenue in hopes of forcing a debate on killing social safety net programs as they do not believe the government has a role in providing them. The starving part of the plan has worked, but they do not have the gumption to actually boldly propose privatization (although the Ryan Plan is pretty close). Instead, they squawk about the fact that we have a spending problem while refusing to propose plans to kill SS and Medicare. The smarter approach would have been to raise taxes commensurate with the services the American people are receiving, then allowing the American people decide whether the value of the services is greater than the taxes being paid.

But Democrats don’t care about this.” Duh, they do, they did when the republicans rammed medicare part D down our throats unfinanced, the money that’s being spent was the two wars not put on budget by the Bush administration, duh duh duh…we still have Afghanistan, duh duh duh….You folks put us there unfinanced duh duh…and the 1.5 trillion duh duh, expect military duh duh cut in half.

Here’s a deal for Republicans….you get to represent the interest of the 2% which means they will get their tax breaks, welfare cheese, credits and deduction. In return for giving the rich everything they and you Republicans want, you will only be entitled to 2% of the vote in the next elections. Thus, if you’re Mr. Boehner, you will get just 2% of the vote even if you got 51%. Let’s see how many of these bozos will win relelection next time around. I would say…that number just below 1 is about right.

Posted by: Billy Bob | December 3, 2012, 2:09 pm 2:09 pm

Sounds like a good strategy. Give Obama his extension of tax credits on the middle class, and nothing else. Obama is trying to force higher taxes on the top 2%, not so much for the small amount of additional revenue, but rather to redistribute wealth, especially that of folks who actually earned it with their own sweat and investing. His attitude is clearly my way or the highway. My sense is go ahead and go over the cliff. Now the bottom 50%, who pay only 3% of all federal income tax will have the opportunity to actually pay some federal income taxes. Obama does not care if we go into a recession, nor where he gets the money to spend, spend, and then spend some more. Obama is the poster child for racial and class warfare and he seems to want to punish anyone who makes money, and give it to folks who did not work for it. It is beyond compulsion, it is an irrational obsession. It is somewhat hypocritical to discuss more ineffectual stimulus plan, and a ten year, maybe never plan to reduce spending. THAT will not happen under an Obama administration, and pigs will fly first. When the U.S. has had no federal budgets the past 4 years, it is very difficult to see our legislators doing much better. If you want to assess the damages, follow the money and watch the stock market and business activity. More correctly, the dearth of business activity in an uncertain economy and tax rate ambiguities.

It’s as simple as this: the Republicans are lazy, and they lost. They thought they could weasel through without being so lazy and do-nothing, but Americans don’t reward lazy, do-nothing types like the Republican Congress.

Now the Republicans can step aside and watch how real leaders and hard workers get things done from the sideline, and learn how to work hard from Obama and the Americans who elected him.

Republicans are so lazy they don’t even have a plan! Whoops, mom, dog ate my homework!

Rep. Tom Cole (R-OK) said Sunday Republicans do not need to put forward a counter offer to President Obama’s debt deal proposal. Cole was responding to Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner, who made the rounds on the Sunday shows calling on Republicans to put forward their own plan debt-reduction plan.

“I don’t think we need to put a formal proposal out on the table,” Cole said on ABC’s “This Week.”

The American people chose Obama in 2012. It’s time for Republicans to watch from the sidelines as a real leader, our President Barack Obama, shows them what real hard work looks like.

Posted by: Dave Davis | December 3, 2012, 2:29 pm 2:29 pm

America chose Obama. That is the simple fact at the base of this. Republicans twist in the wind, trying to come up with excuses, but that’s just what happened. America chose Obama, and now Obama’s policies are going to become law. Republicans lost, and they have to stop whining and come to terms with how they lost in 2012. America chose Obama, and that’s that.

JOB CREATOR

You know I have worked in private industry for 25 years and I have never thought to measure the performance of any company I have worked for by counting the number of jobs created in a given period.

According to Romney I am a job creator. I know how to create jobs. I really do not. If sales go up and we absolutely need someone to fill a gap then we will consider hiring someone. But first we make sure that someone already working for the company cant do that job in addition to their own. We make sure that the customers really want whatever it is they say they want.

The rest of the time good and bad we are always looking to cut jobs. Every BOD meeting the first thing on the agenda is staff optimization. We are never happier than when sales are unaffected by the laying off of a few employees. This is my job. If you own a business this is your job too. I am not evil and neither are you for doing what has to be done to improve profits.

Now, GOVERNMENT DOESN’T CREATE JOBS is a great bumper sticker but it isn’t true, not even a little. (ASK PAUL RYAN) Our customers run the entire spectrum of personal income, we have some guys that are filthy rich and others that merely make a living, Give the people at the top of the heap a tax break and I promise you I will not see them more or less than I already have been. Give the guys in the middle and down that same break and I will likely have to hire some help from the volume we will pick up. Demand creates jobs. Not me. Disposable income in THE RIGHT HANDS leads to demand.

Call it a tax break or call it infrastructure spending or stimulus, But every dollar you send floating to the top will remain there, The dollars that stay a little closer to the ground will eventually cause me and you to hire someone.

Please don’t be fooled again by the trickle down or the notion that Romney “knows the economy” his knowledge of MICROECONOMICS is no greater than yours or the Presidents. The difference is that the president is more likely to give the money to the RIGHT HANDS.

Obama’s deficit$$$$$

Posted by: Billy Bob | December 3, 2012, 2:35 pm 2:35 pm

Obama’s deficit is actually Bush’s deficit.

Bush’s submitted budget for 2009 had a deficit of over $400 billion. His estimated tax revenues fell short by over $600 billion due to the economic crisis on his watch. Bush’s deficit for 2009 was over a trillion dollars before Obama even walked through the doors of the White House.

Posted by: Bob | December 3, 2012, 2:48 pm 2:48 pm

It’s amazing. The republicans always complain about programs for the middle class and poor but never say a word about corporate welfare.

The tax breaks and subsidies the corporations get would fill volumes but the republicans concentrate on Social security, Medicaid and Food Stamp programs.

If there’s anything this fight over the fiscal cliff has produced that is positive it’s bringing the republicans out of the closet. They’ve been conning the American people for 100 years, trying to make them believe that they, the republicans, have middle class interests at heart.

They’ve gotten away with it before but today because of instant news their cover is blown.

A trillion dollars of student loans can be forgiven by the new administration in 2013, but there will be a payback. Those relieved of debt will have to contribute 10 hours of community service helping 3 million black and Hispanic high school dropouts return to class. America has a shortage of scientists and computer engineers; once neglected quitters can lead our challenged work force out of the complexities of the mind into the world of innovation and creativity. If China can dig its best scientists out of its rice fields the US can dig them out of the ghetto.

I suppose I should put my half cent into the mix. Where are the tax increases. The elimination of the tax cuts for the middle class would expire so they would pay more. REPUBLICANS want to leave the loopholes. If someone gets $600 a month and needs $800, how much should he pay in taxes. If that $600 comes from the government, how soon before he becomes homeless, can’t afford to eat, depends on the ER(raising hospital rates). If you have diabetes, or a mental illness and you can’t find a doctor or afford your meds, and the insurance company says you have to wait three years before they will cover you, How do you pay bills that can come up to thousands of dollars? Should these people have their benefits reduced? How much can you tax someone that has to chose between food or medicine every month? These are the questions created with cutting entitlements. I couldn’t find a job for two years at times. I seriously considered taking “Job hunting” to a whole new level pick a company and use a riffle to get hired. I was that tired of puting in applications and not getting a response. How about more suicides from people who are better off dead. I don’t know how many people are in this boat but “lazy bums” who don’t want to work and just want the money might be the select few. Have you heard of the squeaky wheel effect. These are the squeaky wheels that jam things up. Maybe there is another place to look for money. After World War II we had a shock about how advanced the enemy was in submarine warfare. Do we want a repeat. Remember reducing taxes on the wealthy so they will create new jobs has worked so well up till now, why not let it go a little longer. A crippling debt? a problem or a symptom of a problem. Look to history how people are treated and what happens.

I think the positive way to look at this is that by letting us hit the fiscal cliff to protect their millionaire masters, the middle class will finally see what the Republican House members truly are and end their reign next voting session. The downside – could be not much middle class left by then. Hopefully the ‘pub’s in the senate who have to worry about their jobs can make Boehner and crew see reason before it is too late.

I’ve used the Ryan budget as a model, because I have nothing else.

The silence from the republicans is deafening

Posted by: tmferretti | December 3, 2012, 3:20 pm 3:20 pm

I say let’s go over the cliff. The Republican Party needs to clean house and the only way to do that is for people to see their true colors. They want the U.S. to fail, so let it fail. We’ll survive — we may walk with a limp for a while, but we’ll survive and maybe, just maybe people will realize that the GOP is out of touch and new leadership is a MUST.

Posted by: carole | December 3, 2012, 3:24 pm 3:24 pm

The republicans want it both ways. They want all these cuts but they are afraid to tell the middle class and retirees exactly how or how much. They want the democrats who oppose these cuts to do it for them.

It’s hard for any President to make progress when he has to negotiate with himself.

They defend and support big business but when the business leaders tell them to quit worrying about the 4% tax increase they will have to pay and concentrate of getting this economy moving to create a viable market place, the republicans act like they don’t exist.

Talk about a dichotomy, the republicans invented the word.

Once upon a time in this great country the idea was to GROW the economy thru jobs. I am trying to remember the last time this Prez even mentioned jobs. His much heralded Jobs Council met one time..like 10 months ago. Instead, we have seen stimulus, QE1, QE2, and now QE3 with talk of QE4. The sole purpose of QE is only supposed to last long enough to stabilize the economy…well, guess what, we are still at 2% GDP and slowing. So, what we now have in this country is the belief that govt will be responsible for all growth thru taxes and printing money. This Prez is once again successfully using the old class warfare rhetoric to keep folks from concentrating on the real issues. Sounds like 4 years ago to me…no jobs, debt, and another recession coming. Mr. Prez, these are supposed to be your legacy years. Good grief.

The Democrats look like a bunch of idiots, they are desperately trying to crash the economy again, just to get enough tax money to fund the government for 8 whole days. BO is full of BS, he is only offering about $200 billion in real spending cuts over 10 years and a offer to just talk about more cuts later on. NOT good enough! The GOP should walk away from the table!!! After all the House GOP members and John Boehner also won reelection, so I guess they also have a mandate to do whats best for the country, not just what the Liberal Democrats are asking for! This administration is racking-up $1.2 TRILLION or more in new debt every year!

Republican reverse logic:

Anyone advocating a tax cut for 98% of Americans, is NOT a conservative. Only when you cut social programs for 98% of Americans and give the savings to the top 2% are you entitled to the title “True Conservative”.

News Flash for Republicans:

If you represent only the 2% of Americans then your party will only get 2% of the vote in 2014.

Yes, that’s exactly what Bush passed along. Bush’s submitted budget for 2009 has a built in deficit of over $400 billion, but his tax revenue estimates fell short by over $600 billion due to the economic crisis on his watch.

The ongoing deficit Bush passed along was about $1.2 trillion.

This sounds like a good plan. Give the democrats the increased tax rates on the wealthy with nothing more. The increased tax revenue will be negligible. The the serious spending cuts kick in which are what is needed.

I normally don’t think of Boehner as a brilliant politician but this is a great maneuver. If Obama wants his Debt Ceiling raised and unemployment and a Continuing Resolution then he should really consider taking the tax cuts extension for ALL. He won’t be able to say the GOP is holding the Middle-Class Hostage anymore if they allow the vote to extend the Middle-Class tax extension.

When we were kids playing hide and seek, my sister loved the hiding part but refused to play when it was her turn to “seek”.

Congressmen Cole is a rare Republican. He urges passing a tax cut for the middle class and standing by the middle class. That would actually be a win-win for everyone except the 2% of wealthy Americans. This is as good as a victory gets.

The doomsday plan on the other hand is a doomsday plan for the Republican Party. It will forever brand Republicans as sore losers who refuse to play the game unless everyone lets them win. The middle class will get their tax cut and the Democrats will declare unilateral victory.

The GOP could require its members to go back to school and take a few politics courses, but it probably would not help. The arrogant tend to stay ignorant.

New debt comes from the deficit each year.

$1.2 trillion in deficit each year is almost exactly what Bush passed along. Bush’s submitted budget for 2009 has a built in deficit of over $400 billion, but his tax revenue estimates fell short by over $600 billion due to the economic crisis on his watch.

Why is the GOP so adamant to stick to their no-tax-increase pledge, but they’re so quick to stab us in the back with demanded cuts in Social Security and Medicare spending when during the campaign they said they wouldn’t touch Social Security for ten years and would restore $716B that Obama “stole” from Medicare? If a commercial firm so mislead people about money in their advertising they’d be liable for criminal charges!

They are small minded, arrogant men who care nothing for the well being of the United States and the people they represent. I hope they get elected out of office in 2014. By these actions, they are sure making a case for them to be removed and place leadership that is willing to compromise and move the country in the right direction but giving a S$%t

Ernst & Young, July 2012: This report finds that the increase in the top tax rates would reduce long-run output by 1.3% when the resulting revenue is used to finance additional government spending. Employment is found to fall by 0.5%. In today’s economy, these results would translate into a reduction of gross domestic product (GDP) of $200 billion and employment by 710,000 jobs.

My mistake, the CBO did not issue this report, but the impact on jobs is never the less unchanged!

May the Republicans continue with their astonishly anti-middle class stupidity. Maybe voters will eventually boot them all out and replace them with any moderates that may survive somewhere out in the American wilderness.

What moron thinks voting “present” is a good thing. Taxes are going to remain as they are for the 98%, so why wouldn’t anyone not an idiot vote for leaving them alone to get credit, false though it would be, for being a sensible legislator who serves his constituents and the nation?

It’s too bad for the Republicans that you can’t get extra votes for being supremely stupid, because they would clean up.

the economy’s problem is lack of demand which has something to do with the unemployment and under employment.

means test medicare – that will help. ending the government subsidy(14% bonus) to private providers of medicare advantage will help. electronic medical records are a step in the right direction.

Obamacare was a giant lumbering sloppy painful step in the right direction to tackle health care costs in this country – one of the major drags on our economy…

The report didn’t give details on when the job and economic losses would occur, although an end note said two-thirds to three-fourths of the long-run effect would occur within a decade.

So 3/4 of the jobs (ie. 500,000 jobs) would be lost within a decade – that’s 50,000 jobs a year or about 4,300 jobs a month – Bush was losing 850,000 jobs A MONTH!

We’re currently gaining about 160,000 jobs a month, so that might be reduced to 155,000 jobs a month gained.

Your hysteria is not justified

Didn’t Obama win the election and NOT this employee of the Koch brothers David H. Charles Koch
The billionaire brothers who are waging a war against Obama with the help of the Republican party their also created the tea party.

These views dovetail with the brothers’ corporate interests. In a study released this spring, the University of Massachusetts at Amherst’s Political Economy Research Institute named Koch Industries one of the top ten air polluters in the United States. And Greenpeace issued a report identifying the company as a “kingpin of climate science denial.” The report showed that, from 2005 to 2008, the Kochs vastly outdid ExxonMobil in giving money to organizations fighting legislation related to climate change, underwriting a huge network of foundations, think tanks, and political front groups. Indeed, the brothers have funded opposition campaigns against so many Obama Administration policies—from health-care reform to the economic-stimulus program—that, in political circles, their ideological network is known as the Koch top us.

Boehner is a lowlife who employed by the Koch brothers David H. and Charles Koch. The Kochs are the fourth richest people in the USA who believe in drastically lower personal and corporate taxes, minimal social services for the needy, and much less oversight of industry—especially environmental regulation. I am just amazed at the number of low information people who are blaming everything on the Republicans.
Why is everyone ignoring the fact that in a little over two decades fully half of our budget will be interest only?
Do you really think it’s moral for our generation to suck up all of the freebies today and leave the bills to someone else?
Yes, tax increases are fine but that will not solve the deficit. We need cuts too and the Dems only want to tax and spend more.

Posted by: AMERIKANISCH | December 3, 2012, 6:36 pm 6:36 pm

Mr Romney lost the election because of low information voters and dependency voters (easy prey for the class warriors).

The rich paid more. Despite endless claims by critics that Bush’s tax cuts favored the rich, the fact is the rich ended up paying more in taxes after they went into effect.

In fact, IRS data show that the richest 1% paid $84 billion more in taxes in 2007 than they had in 2000 — that’s a 23% increase — even though their average tax rate went down.

What’s more, their share of the overall income tax burden grew, climbing from 37% in 2000 to 40% in 2007.

At the other end of the spectrum, the bottom half of taxpayers paid $6 billion less in income taxes in 2007 than they had seven years earlier — a 16% drop — and their share of the total income tax burden dropped from 3.9% to 2.9%.

Millions dropped from the tax rolls entirely. Another unheralded feature of the Bush tax cuts is that they pushed nearly 8 million people off the tax rolls entirely because, among other things, Bush doubled the per-child tax credit to $1,000 and lowered the bottom rate to 10%.

For those who say this is only because these people paid more taxes because they made more money….that would only be a concern for a marxist (jealousy and greed). A normal person, with a brain, would see that these people had their tax burden increased and that they are paying the country’s major tax burden. Further if they are owners of businesses and corporations, they expanded and hired people. Mr Bush created 10 million new jobs during his tenure. Mr Reagan, using the same principles, created 21 million new jobs during his tenure. Mr Reagan reduced the top marginal tax rate from 72% down to 40%. Some years ago a survey was done by one to the democrap media outlets, and found that the American people thought that no one should pay more than 25% of their income in taxes. Yes Obummer’s marxism has fueled more jealousy, greed and division, that is true

Remember, in the past election, the republicans retained (won) control of the House. All spending bills originate in the House. If the President can’t be fiscally responsible it is House of Representatives (the people’s house) that must step up to the plate and be the grownup.

Mr Romney lost the election because of low information voters and dependency voters

No, Romney lost the election because the majority of voters didn’t vote for him. All up and down the income spectrum voters chose President Obama over Romney.

If you Republican right wingers keep believing your own propaganda, you’ll continue to lose elections.

People who bicker that one party is good and the other is bad are obviously too stuck up their own rears to see the forest for the trees, and we all suffer for their ignorance.

Does anyone above understand where the vast majority of the deflicit comes from? I don’t think so. Let me clue you in guys.

1.) Lower tax revenues from the Reagon and Bush tax cuts.

2.) Lower tax revenue from major recessions at the end of the Reagon years and again after the Bush years continuing into the Obama years.

3.) Lower tax revenue from U.S. businesses moving jobs overseas.

4.) Lower tax revenue from U.S. businesses moving their headquarters overseas.

5.) Spending on three wars. One during the Bush Sr. years and two during the Bush Jr. years.

6.) Increased/new spending on Homeland Security including a huge expansion in government personnel to man it plus payments to each of the 50 states for similar measures.

7.) Increased costs to Medicare because of civilian increases in the cost of medical care and prescriptions.

You can find proof of all the above if you care to look. But I doubt that many of you will make the effort

Rather, you will continue to blame Democrate spending (but you will not supply any facts or figures). And you will continue to blame “welfare” (the majority of welfare was ended during the Clinton years). And for some of you, Social Security is to blame (yet it is paid for by the 15% payroll deductions that is separate from federal income tax).

I fear for the U.S. not due to any “fiscal cliff” but because of the ignorance, selfishness and hatred of so many of it’s citizens.
