SCHAKOWSKY RECEIVES "HERO" AWARD FROM THE NATIONAL COUNCIL OF SENIOR CITIZENS

CHICAGO, IL - For her continuing commitment to our nation's seniors, U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) was designated a "hero" by the National Council of Senior Citizens. At a news conference in Chicago, members of the National Council and the Illinois Chapter presented Schakowsky with a blue ribbon and a certificate of appreciation for scoring a 90% on the organization's 1999 voting record.

"The seniors of our country can always count on the National Council of Senior Citizens.  That is why I am proud to join NCSC every step of the way as we fight for our nation's seniors and as we stand up to the big drug companies, the insurance industry, and special interests," Schakowsky said.

"Our priorities are clear.  Together, we will continue to protect Social Security from all privatization schemes that would weaken the program and put our seniors at real risk.  We will also work to give all seniors access to universal, voluntary, and affordable Medicare prescription drug coverage," added Schakowsky, who was executive director of the Illinois Council of Senior Citizens from 1985 - 1990.

The 1999 NCSC Voting Record rated Members of Congress on a number of votes relating to issues including Social Security, Medicare, senior housing, health research, and the patients' bill of rights.
