Foreign Affairs

Our nation is faced with a variety of challenges abroad; below are my views on a number issues that I have taken action on in the 112th Congress:

Combating Religious Persecution
I remained concerned about the persecution of religious minorities throughout the world.  As a cosponsor of H.R. 440, I was pleased to help pass this bill in July 2011 that would direct the President to appoint a Special Envoy to promote religious freedom of religious minorities in the Near East and South Central Asia within the Department of State.

Israel
I support a strong alliance with Israel and believe there is a significant bond between the United States and Israel.  In May 2012 I helped pass H.R. 4133 which reaffirms and strengthens the U.S. commitment to Israel.  Earlier in July 2011, I voted for and helped pass a resolution that reaffirms support for a negotiated solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict resulting in two states and states that any Palestinian unity government must renounce terrorism, accept Israel's right to exist, and reaffirm previous agreements made with Israel.

The Israelis, Palestinians and all Middle Eastern states must commit to working toward a peaceful solution that realizes the vision of two nations living peacefully side by side. Too many innocent lives have already been lost in the conflict.

Iran
I believe in order to ensure stability in the region, efforts must be taken compel Iran to abandon its nuclear ambitions. In December 2011, I voted for H.R. 1905 and H.R. 2105 to tighten and expand sanctions on Iran and to cut off their supply network.  As a cosponsor, I was also pleased to help pass in May 2012 H.Res. 568 which expresses the sense of the House of Representatives regarding the importance of preventing the Government of Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapons capability.

United Nations Accountability
I remained concerned about the efficiency and effectiveness of the United Nations (UN) system.  I am a cosponsor of H.R. 2829 which would give the U.S. greater say over how our tax dollars are spent at the United Nations, and uses the threat of withholding U.S. contributions as leverage to push for real reforms at the UN.

Uganda
The ongoing injustices in Uganda continue to be of great concern to me and my family. My direct contacts in Uganda have experienced firsthand the atrocities of Joseph Kony's Lord Resistance Army (LRA) forces.

In March 2011 I agreed to cosponsor H.R. 895, the Sudan Cessation of Support for the Lord's Resistance Army Certification Act. The bill requires the continuation of restrictions against the Republic of Sudan as a state sponsor of terror unless the President certifies that Sudan is no longer supporting the LRA and Joseph Kony.
