Defense and Homeland Security

Preventing the next attack on American soil must remain a national priority. I am proud to serve as a member of the House Committee on Homeland Security in the 112th Congress.  In this role, I have focused my efforts on:

Securing the Homeland

Protecting our nation from external threats is a multi-front mission. Thwarting future terrorist attacks requires that we secure our borders, protect our critical infrastructure and key resources, enforce our immigration laws, and safeguard our cyberspace.  I have taken part in a series of hearings on the threat of Islamic Radicalization held by the Homeland Security Committee, and am a cosponsor of H.R. 1299, the Secure our Borders Act.  In March 2011, I became an original cosponsor of H.R. 901, the Chemical Facility Anti-Terrorism Security Authorization Act, an important piece of legislation to ensure our infrastructure is safe from attack.  Additionally, I have cosponsored legislation, H.R. 3523 and H.R. 3674, to facilitate partnerships between the private sector and government to ensure the safety of our nation’s cyberspace.

Fighting al-Qaeda and Its Affiliates

As American military forces continue their missions in Iraq, Afghanistan, and around the world, we must remain vigilant in our cause to defend freedom abroad when necessary.  The death of Osama bin Laden in May of 2011 was a testament to the commitment of our intelligence community and armed forces in the War on Terror.

Providing Ample Resources
I am proud to represent the 110th Airlift Wing, located at the Battle Creek Air National Guard Base in Battle Creek, Michigan.  Our troops are committed to defending and sacrificing for the American people.  When they go into battle, they deserve the best training, equipment, and resources to accomplish their mission to uphold the foundational principles of America.

President Obama’s new defense strategy would severely hamper our military posture, while making draconian cuts to the Air National Guard.  The Air Guard provides 35% of our air capability at only 6% of the cost, making it the most efficient component of our Air Force.  I joined my House colleagues in supporting H.R. 4310, the 2013 National Defense Authorization Act, which rejected the Administration’s attempts to cut our military and restored cost-effective programs like the C-27J. Congress must continue to adequately fund our military and intelligence programs, while ensuring that hard-earned taxpayer dollars are spent responsibly. I will continue to fight for legislation that ensures our men and women in uniform have the necessary resources when they go into battle.
