July 13, 2009

WASHINGTON, DC- Congressman Peter DeFazio (D-Springfield) this week secured $400,000 to help expand the nursing program at Lane Community College (LCC).  The funding was approved as part of the Labor, Health and Human Services Appropriations Act for fiscal year 2010, which passed out of subcommittee today.   “Our nation is currently facing both record unemployment and a nursing shortage.  Training more individuals to be nurses is a win-win.  Nurses are integral to our healthcare system and it is a well paying and stable job.  I am pleased I was able to secure this critical funding which will allow for the expansion of the L.C.C. nursing program,” DeFazio said.   Every year LCC is forced to turn qualified students away despite the national shortage of nurses due to lack of space.  This funding will allow LCC to build a simulation laboratory which is critical in increasing Lane’s capacity to train more nurses.    This expansion will allow more Oregonians to gain training so that they can secure employment in an expanding and well paying field.
