Big returns: Altmire gives back $1 million

U.S. Rep. Jason Altmire, D-4, McCandless Township, lost to U.S. Rep. Mark Critz, D-12, Johnstown, in a heated primary battle for the newly drawn 12th Congressional District. Last week, though, Altmire's office announced that by the time he leaves office next month he will have returned more than $1 million in unspent office funds.

Community honors hometown war hero

ELLWOOD CITY -- Coincidentally, the ceremony to recognize Vietnam War Medal of Honor recipient Leslie Sabo was held on the front steps of Christ Presbyterian Church, where Sabo attended Sunday school as a child. But U.S. Rep. Jason Altmire, D-4, McCandless Township, who participated in the legislative effort to ensure that Sabo received the U.S. military's highest award for combat valor, said the coincidence was appropriate. It was in that church, Altmire said Sunday during the ceremony, and in this community that imbued Sabo with the values that compelled him to distinguish himself in the Cambodian jungle on May 10, 1970.

Altmire Amendment Preserves Funding for Yellow Ribbon Program for Veterans

WASHINGTON, D.C. – This week, Congressman Jason Altmire (PA-04) offered an amendment to the Fiscal Year (FY) 2013 Department of Defense Appropriations Act to preserve funding for the Department of Defense Yellow Ribbon Program.
The program provides specialized services to meet the unique needs of National Guard and Reserve combat veterans and their families before, during, and after deployments.  It was slated to be cut by $15.5 million in FY13, but the Altmire amendment, which passed by voice-vote on Wednesday, restores funding to last year's level.
